Wolverines get first win

Katie Sowers and Devin Laughlin combined for 30 points as East Mills got its first win of the season with a 47-37 victory over Sidney on Friday.

The Wolverines (1-5 overall, 1-3 in the Corner Conference) started slow with just two first-quarter points but heated up in the second quarter, said coach Jeff Laughlin.
“We went to a pressure defense, man-to-man in the second quarter and that seemed to key us,” Laughlin said. “Brianna Weak had four steals in the second quarter and our defense set up our offense.”
The Wolverines scored 19 points in the second frame.
The Cowgirls came back to tie the score at 34-34 in the fourth quarter but East Mills scored 13 of the next 16 points to seal the win.
“Katie shot it well and Devin distributed it and made her free throws when it counted,” Laughlin said.
Sowers led all scorers with 18 points and Laughlin chipped in with 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
