Wolverines too much for Sidney

East Mills’ Landon Gibbs ran for 227 yards and five touchdowns in the win over Sidney.

East Mills rushed for a season-high 312 yards and improved to 2-0 in Eight-player, District 10 football in a 54-28 win over Sidney on the road Friday.

The Wolverines built a 21-0 halftime lead and finished with a season-high in points and total yards (462) in the win.

“We really played as a team and we had a lot of kids step up and make some plays,” said East Mills coach Trenton Turney.

Landon Gibbs was perhaps the one to step up the most. The senior running back rushed for a career-best 227 yards and five touchdowns on just 13 carries.

“Landon had a great night running the ball and kept getting yards after contact,” Turney said. “I believe he was 10 yards short of getting the school record in yards but tied the school record for rushing touchdowns in a game.”

Khayden Poorker added a touchdown running while throwing for 135 yards and two more TDs while completing 12-of-19 passes.

Defensively, the Wolverines forced five turnovers and never let the Cowboys looked comfortable until midway through the third quarter with substitutes sprinkled into the lineup.

“Our line was aggressive and fast,” Turney said. “Tyson Ellis was in the backfield all night and had the best game of his life getting three tackles for loss and a sack.”

Jhalil Reed added 6.5 tackles and an interception. Gibbs added two interceptions and four solo tackles on defense.

With its 4-2 record overall and 2-0 mark in the district, the Wolverines’ next two weeks will go far in deciding their postseason prospects. They head on the road to face top five rated Woodbine (4-0) next week before hosting Boyer Valley (3-1) on Oct. 2.

We play two top teams in the district, and we are going to have to play perfect if we want a chance of any upset,” Turney said. “We are looking to get better every week.”
