Weldon, Ewalt come up big in Knights’ win

Teagan Ewalt scored 15 points in the Knights’ win over Essex Friday.
Izzy Weldon scored 23 and Teagan Ewalt 15 for Fremont-Mills in a 60-37 victory over Essex in Corner Conference girls basketball Friday.
Weldon hit 5-of-13 shots and grabbed eight steals defensively in the win. Ewalt connected on 7-of-16 shots, pulled down five rebounds and grabbed six steals.
Logan-Magnolia 38,
Fremont-Mills 28
Logan-Magnolia held Fremont-Mills to just five points combined in the second and third quarters in a 38-28 victory in non-conference girls basketball Thursday in Tabor.
The Knights (1-1) had an off-night offensively against the Panthers. They shot 23.9 percent (11-of-46) from the field, including 5-of-28 from behind the arc, in the loss.
Teagan Ewalt led the Knights with 11 points. Izzy Weldon added eight points and three assists.
Mya Moss paced Logan-Magnolia with 15 points.
Fremont-Mills 78,
Heartland Christian 12
Fremont-Mills kicked off its season with a 78-12 rout of Heartland Christian in an out-of-conference girls basketball tilt last Monday.
The Knights forced 10 first quarter turnovers with its smothering press and led 22-2 after the opening frame. That defensive pressure was the difference, said Knights head coach Brett Weldon.
“We’ve focused a lot on our defense and our pressure game,” Weldon said. “We’re going to have to get in peoples faces and cause turnovers. I liked that we were really crisp with the ball. Sometimes in games that get like that we get sloppy and I was proud of the girls for not getting sloppy. We stayed solid.”
Fremont-Mills grabbed 14 steals and forced more than 30 turnovers in the win.
Offensively, the Knights shot 51.5 percent from the field (34-of-66) despite missing 16 of their 19 three-point attempts. Weldon isn’t too concerned about his team’s outside shooting.
“I think we had some first game jitters. It’s a different game shooting in practice than shooting in games. There’s not the same intensity as a game.”
Teagan Ewalt paced four Knights in double-figures with 19 points. Ryleigh Ewalt came off the bench to score 15 and Macy Mitchell and Izzy Weldon added 10 points each.
For a first game, Weldon gave his team a “solid B” grade.
“There’s going to be other games where we get called for fouls a little more than we did tonight in these situations,” he said. “I’ve told them a million times move your feet, play good defense and stop reaching. We still struggle with that and it’s something we can improve on. That and our outside shooting. But I was happy with the effort.”
