Tigers blank FM for Corner championship


Fremont-Mills’ Adelynn Billingsley tossed a one-hit shutout in the Knights’ 13-0 win over East Mills in the Corner Conference Softball Tournament semifinals

Griswold grabbed its sixth Corner Conference Softball Tournament championship in seven seasons with an 11-3 win over Fremont-Mills Friday in Sidney.

The Tigers (20-4 overall, 10-0 in the Corner Conference) rallied from an early 2-0 hole, exploding for six runs in the second inning on theirway to victory. Carsyn Adams got the Tigers’ bats going on in the bottom of the second with a two-run single and finished with

Ailey Wahlert’s three-run home run.

In all, the Tigers belted three home with runs with Addison Adams and Courtney Follman both going deep. Carsyn Adams was 2-for-3 on the night with Addison Adams going 2-for-4 and driving in three runs.

“This was truly a team effort with nine different players scoring,” said Griswold coach Jody Rossell. “I was proud of how disciplined the girls were on their pitch selection. They  just trust their teammates and our offense so they remain poised under pressure. Obviously, we had three different players come through with a home run in that game which sure helped feed our momentum during the game.”

Wahlert picked up the win in the circle after scattering three hits and one earned run while fanning four in the complete game.

Reese Gute, Lana Alley, Kinley Blackburn and Lindze Smith each singled for the Knights (14-7 overall, 7-1 in the conference).

Saige Mitchell was credited with the loss allowing six hits and one earned run. Four Knight fielding errors led to six unearned runs.

Fremont-Mills 5,
Bedford 4

Fremont-Mills rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to down Bedford 5-4 in the Corner Conference Tournament Semifinals Thursday.

The Knights notched nine hits in the win.

Lana Alley was 3-for-4 with a run driven in and a run scored for Fremont-Mills.

Bella Gute and Lindze Smith had two hits each and a scored a run.

Saige Mitchell went the distance in the victory, scattering seven hits and four earned runs while striking out three.

Aniya Hardee and Elixa Johnson had two hits each at the plate and Macy Musich scattered four hits and four earned runs while striking out seven in the loss.

Griswold-CAM 13,
Stanton 3

Courtney Follman went 2-for-3 the plate and drove in three runs and Sadie Gohlinghorst scattered two hits in a complete game pitching victory in Griswold’s 13-3 win over Stanton in the Corner Conference semifinals Thursday.

The score was tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the third inning when the Tigers’ bats came to life – with the help of some Viqueens fielding cues.

“The first innings with were good,” said Stanton coach Brandie McFarland. “We stayed with them but them errors took over.”

Stanton finished with seven errors in the game leading to seven unearned runs.

Ailey Wahlert and Keeley Kinney had two hits each and drove in a run for Griswold.  

Gohlinghorst fanned four, walked two and scattered two hits in the four-inning victory.

Kiela Franzen had two hits and drove in a run for Stanton.

Bree Mitchell took the loss in the circle scattering eight hits and six earned runs.

Fremont-Mills 13,
East Mills 0

Fremont-Mills blanked East Mills 13-0 in the first round at the Corner Conference softball tournament Thursday in Tabor.

The Knights recorded 13 hits and stole 13 bases in the win.

Lana Alley, Saige Mitchell, Lindze Smith and Hannah Wilson had two hits each for the Knights. Mitchell and Smith each drove in two runs. Alley scored three runs and stole seven bases on the night.

Adelynn Billingsley struck out six and allowed just one hit in the four-inning victory.

Stanton 18,
Sidney 8

Bree Mitchell hit a home run, a double and drove in three runs for Stanton in an 18-8 win over Sidney in the opening round of the Corner Conference Softball Tournament Thursday.

The Viqueens jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and then added to their margin with an eight run second inning.

The early lead was plenty for Kiela Franzen in the circle. The senior allowed just one hit and four earned runs.

Mitchell was 4-for-4 at the plate to lead a 17-hit Stanton attack.

Cooper Stephens had three hits and Franzen, Janae Schwery, Kyla Hart and Quinn McDonald added hits each.

West Monona 14,
Griswold-CAM 8

West Monona pulled away from Griswold with a seven run sixth inning in a 14-8 victory in non-conference softball last Tuesday.

Ailey Wahlert homered and drove in three runs and was credited with the loss in the circle after allowing four hits and over 5 1/3 innings.

Addison Adams had two hits and drove in two runs and Marissa Askeland and Carsyn Adams added two hits each.
