Slow start dooms Rams in Red Oak

Allison Koontz recorded 46 assists in Glenwood’s 2-4 day at the Red Oak invite.

Glenwood got off to a slow start in pool play and never quite got in synch in a 2-4 day at the Red Oak Tigers Volleyball Invitational Saturday.

The Rams (10-14 overall, 1-4 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) dropped their first four matches on the day, the first two in pool play to Council Bluffs St. Albert 18-21, 21-17, 11-15 and Sidney 17-21, 15-21 before going to drop decisions to Underwood 16-21, 21-18, 7-15 and Clarinda 25-23, 20-25, 13-15.

They capped their day with a pair of bounceback wins over Creston 25-16, 25-14 and Lenox 25-12, 25-19.

But Glenwood head coach Paula Carman said her team’s start of the day stuck with her team all tournament.

“We weren’t real pleased with how we opened pool play in the morning,” Carman said. “We could have finished a little bit better so coming out 0-2 was a tough way to start the day. We did some things well but we just couldn’t seem to finish and it set the tone for bracket play.”

Carman said her team was “in” all four of their losses but could never stay consistent.

“We struggled a little bit at the net with hitters finishing,” she said. “And I think the unforced errors took us more out of those matches than I wish they would have.”
Maddie Roenfeld led the Rams with 39 kills on the day. Zoie Carda gave the Rams a nice “spark,” according to Carman, with 36 kills on the day.

Setter McKenna Koehler recorded 62 set assists and teammate Allison Koontz added 46 assists.
