Quick start lifts Rams in 47-6 win

Glenwood scored 28 first quarter points and cruised to a 47-6 road victory over Atlantic in non-district football Friday.

The Rams (2-0) scored touchdowns on their first four possessions and controlled from the opening kick in the victory.

“Things went well for us,” said Glenwood coach Cory Faust. “I think the key for us was things went well up front. We dominated on both sides of the line of scrimmage.”

Faust said two “dynamic players” for the Trojans had his team’s attention: wide receiver Colton Rasmussen and running back Dante Hendrington. Neither was able to wiggle free and hurt the Rams all game long.

“We were able to keep two players really near Rasmussen all night and still stop the run, so we have to credit our defensive line. Also, our linebackers and even defensive backs, did a really good job stopping the run.”

Faust commended the play of his defensive line: Logan Hughes, Preston Longchaya, Parker Getter and Trent Patton.

“They started the game, and we had some other guys rotate in, but they were outstanding,” Faust said.

The Ram defense limited the Trojans to 204 total yards, most of it coming after halftime. They also forced four turnovers, one of which Cole Staudt returned 37 yards for a touchdown.

Offensively Glenwood had good balance, rushing for 134 yards on 5.6 yards per carry and throwing for 186 yards. Quarterback Kayden Anderson was 10-of-11 throwing on the night, with two touchdown tosses to Payton Longmeyer. Longmeyer hauled in five passes for 102 yards.

“I don’t think you expect to have every play go so well, especially early like we did, but our guys made plays almost at will and our guys know that doesn’t happen every week,” Faust said. “I think it was a combination of it not being such a great night for Atlantic and maybe they hurt themselves, but it showed we have really good players. It starts up front with the offensive line and a really good quarterback who can deliver it to different people.”

Pauley Simonetti led the Rams rushing attack with 56 yards on eight carries. Tristan Meier carried 10 times for 48 yards and two touchdowns.

Glenwood heads to Harlan on Friday for its final non-district showdown of the season. Kickoff at Merrill Field is set for 7 p.m.
