Glenwood splits pair in Omaha double-header

Glenwood’s Korbin Pelzer, shown here earlier this season, had two hits and made two big plays on foul ball outs in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the Rams’ 7-6 win over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln Saturday at Tal Anderson Field in Omaha.

Glenwood split a pair of games at the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Tal Anderson Field Saturday.

The Rams (9-15 overall, 7-9 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) fell 25-4 to Class 4A No. 4 ranked Sioux City East in the opener and came back to score a run in the seventh to down Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, 7-6.

The opener was tied at 2-2 before the Black Raiders, who had 19 hits in the game, pulled away.

“We were saving pitchers for conference play and I’m not sure it would have made a big difference, they sit back and swing the bat so well,” said Glenwood coach Dave Clark of East’s offense. “They kept stacking runs and our guys got a little defeated and booting some balls and they kept hitting.”

The Black Raiders’ Cal Jepsen had three hits and drove in three runs and Jax Theeler and Brody Hanks added two hits each and drove in three runs. Lyncoln McCaffrey doubled and singled and drove in four runs.

Hanks picked up the win on the hill, scattering six hits and three earned runs.

Brennan Anderson took the loss for the Rams. The junior allowed nine hits and 12 earned runs.

Ryan Turner had two hits and drove in two runs for Glenwood in game one.

Against Abraham Lincoln, Trey Williamson went the distance on the mound and allowed nine hits and four earned runs with two strikeouts in the 89-pitch victory.

“He was in a situation where we had to pull him or let him go the distance and we made the decision as a team and we let him go and he finished it,” Clark said of his sophomore pitcher.

Clark said Rams catch Korbin Pelzer came up with back-to-back foul popout snags just in front of the backstop for the final two outs to secure the win.

“That was a great defensive display by him so I was really proud of him for that,” Clark said.

Pelzer, Turner and Pierce Dalton each collected two hits. Turned drove in three runs and Ben Carlo doubled and drove in a run.

Rams nip Tigers,
11-10 in H-10 baseball

Red Oak built a 5-1 lead after two innings but couldn’t hold on as Glenwood rallied with two runs in each of the third and four innings and four more in the fifth to rally for an 11-10 win in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball Friday.

The Rams (9-15 overall, 7-9 in the conference) smacked nine hits off a trio of Tiger pitchers. Ryan Turner smacked a home run and drive in three runs among his three hits and Grahm Newberry had three hits and drove in two runs.

Benn Christiansen scattered six hits and three earned runs in five innings of work to earn the win.

“We had a big an inning of errors and Benn gave up some hits and a few walks and they got that big inning early and we decided to get back in the game and start hitting and we chipped away,” said Glenwood coach Dave Clark. “Benn kept his cool on the mound so that was good to see. We were able to make it all the way back and it was a fun one.”

Carson Roeder started on the mound for the Tigers and allowed five earned runs, walked four, and struck out three in three innings of work.  Brody Bond came on to pitch and one and two-thirds in relief to take the loss. Bond allowed two hits, five earned runs and struck out two.

Bond did help his own case at the plate with three singles and three runs scored.  Cale Hall and Masen Fisher had two hits each and Adam Baier singled and drove in three runs.

“Our offensive approach was great tonight as we outhit Glenwood 11-8,” said Red Oak Coach Mark Erickson. “We needed another hit or two with runners in scoring position.  We walked eight and hit one.  It’s hard to win games giving up nine free bases.  We have confidence that the guys who pitched tonight will have better outings next week.”

With the loss, the Tigers drop to 10-13 overall and 5-12 in the conference.

Glenwood 9,
Shenandoah 8 - 9 innings

Myles Stanton’s walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth drove in the game-winning run in Glenwood’s 9-8 victory over Shenandoah Thursday.

“That was big for Myles,” said Glenwood coach Dave Clark. “They went up, and we tied and then they went back up and we came back again and forced extras (innings). He (Myles) had been hitting in spurts in that No. 9 spot and he’s done some good things there so I was happy for him.”

Twice the Rams rallied in the game, coming back from a 5-1 hole to take a 8-5 lead in the fifth and then again in the ninth.

Stanton finished his night 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Benn Christiansen added three hits and an RBI. Korbin Pelzer singled and drove in two runs.

Max Koehler came on in relief to pick up the win on the mound. The eighth grader did not allow a hit and walked one in an inning of work.

Joey O’Rourke took the loss for the Mustangs after allowing four hits and an earned run in an inning of work.

Tyler Babe had three hits and Cole Scamman had two hits and drove in a run.
