Glenwood girls H-10 reign comes to an end

Glenwood's Maggie Smith placed second in the discus and sixth in the shot at last week's Hawkeye 10 Conference Track and Field Meet.

Atlantic ended Glenwood’s seven-year reign at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Track and Field Meet Thursday at the Glenwood Activities Complex.

The Trojans captured its first conference title in over 20 years with five gold medals and a team score of 131.5 to Rams runner-up 127 point day.

Council Bluffs Lewis Central, competing in its last Hawkeye 10 Conference meet as it prepares to join the Missouri River Activities Conference next season, was the boys team champion with a team score of 154. Atlantic was the runner-up with 101 points. Glenwood’s boys squad was third with 99.5 points.

Glenwood’s girls may not have grabbed its eighth straight conference title, but they did match the Trojans with five gold medals.

“Atlantic is a heck of a team,” said Glenwood girls coach Jordan Bueltel. “They have some outstanding sprints and hurdles, and they got what they needed out of their distance girls and their throws.  Hats off to them they have a great squad and had a heck of a meet.

“I was so impressed by our girls last night, it was easily our best meet of the year,” Bueltel said. “So, if the streak had to come to an end, at least it ended with us giving it our best performance, can't ask for anything more than that.”

The Rans had three different girls win individual events with Ava Hernandez tossing 35’ 6.5 inches to win the shot, Gracer Berglund running a 10:21.11 to win the 3,000-meters and Megan Hughes capturing gold in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.54.

They added to their haul with golds in the 4x400 and sprint medley relays.

Brooklyn Kelsey, Kelsey Hughes, Olivia Wright and Caitlyn Hebel ran a 1:50.98 to win the sprint medley and Hebel, Wright, Haylee Hughes and Megan Hughes combined to win the 4x400 in 4:08.76.

“Grace was just a machine last night, not only because she won the 3000, but we loaded her up with four events and man you would never know it by watching her, she is just so impressive,” Bueltel said of Berglund, who also placed third in the 1,500, fifth in the 800 and second as part of the 4x800-meter relay.

“Olivia, Haylee, and Caitlin were all in that same boat by being asked to run four events, and just as they have all season, set the tone for the team,” Bueltel added. “Great job all around.”

Bueltel also commended his hurdler group. The Rams won a total of four medals in the hurdle events with Megan Hughes capturing gold in the 100-meter hurdles, Emileigh Petersen (sixth) and Kasey Hilsabeck (eight) doubling up on medals in the 400-meters hurdles and the shuttle hurdle relay finishing fourth.

“Megan of course winning the 100 was big, but I can't say enough about our shuttle and our 400-meter hurdles, just a great day for them,” Bueltel said. “Rylie (Russmann) has dropped over half second in the last week or so off her times, and then Emi and Kasey both running the 400 for just the second time all year both had huge PRs (personal records) and scored points for us.  Hard to find two girls that are excited to run that race, but they really stepped into that spot and did a great job.”

Hernandez and Maggie Smith had a big day in throw for the Rams. In addition to her gold in the shot, Smith was Todd Ssecond in the discus and sixth in the shot.

“Throws have been big for us over the past couple weeks,” Bueltel said. “Maggie has been setting new pr after new pr in the disc these last couple weeks and Ava has been doing a heck of a job winning meets and matched her PR last night as well.”

On the boys side, Lewis Central made a splash at its final Hawkeye 10 meet, winning six events.

Glenwood boys coach Mark Starner said his team has his share of injuries this year, but they were healthier at the conference meet than they had been in the last couple of weeks. But they were not at full strength, the coach added.

“We knew it would be a dog fight for the top 3-4 spots and that every little point would count,” Starner said.  “We ended up getting third but going into the 4x400 (meter relay), we were in second.  Atlantic ended up winning the 4x4, we were second and Clarinda was sixth. This marks the 19th straight year that we have finished, at minimum, in the top three at the team standings.”

The Rams lone gold medal came from Chase Razor in the high jump – and boy was it a big one.  The defending conference champion smashed his personal best 6 feet, 6 inches to win gold.

“Chase had a great day jumping,” Starner said. “He was definitely on; he just kept clearly at each height with ease.  He also had some great attempts at 6 feet, 8.5 inches before going out.”

The Rams were runners-up in three relays: the 4x200, 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays.  Each was the Rams’ second fastest clocking of the season.

Razor, Tristan Ludwig, Shain Pratt and Kaden Crouch ran a 42.88 for second in the 4x100. Haze Stephens and Dylan Powles joined Pratt and Crouch to run a 1:30/73 in the 4x200 and Evan Stanislav, Bryce Keller, Powles and Stephens clocked a 3:29 in the 4x400.

Todd Schmitt (discus), Aaden Lopez (110-meter hurdles), the shuttle hurdle relay and Stanislav in the high jump all placed third at the meet.

“Todd has been really consistent in the discus here as of late, and even on an off day, he doesn't dip too far below his normal throws,” Starner said of Schmitt, who added a sixth-place medal in the shot.  “He's ready for another big jump.”

Lopez anchored the shuttle hurdle with an outstanding leg and came up a little short at the finish behind Atlantic.  Aaden has been nursing a sore knee, but in the 110, he was flying through the ninth hurdle when the Atlantic and LC hurdlers caught him.  He came off a little wobbling off the ninth hurdle and then landed wrong on the final hurdle where his knee buckled, and he hobbled to the finish for his second fastest time of the season.”

Overall, Starner said he was pleased with his team’s effort, even if felt they had chances to finish higher.

“Lewis Central was just able to score in a lot of different ways, and no one was going to touch them,” Starner said.

Both the girls and boys squads now turn their eyes to Thursday’s State Qualifying Meet back in Glenwood.

“We’re going to see how much we can qualify to extend our season for one more week,” Starner said. “We have some things going in the right direction.  We'll heal up and see who is available and go from there.  It will be another tough meet with ADM, Des Moines Christian and Atlantic being the top teams to battle with.”
