The Glenwood boys basketball team picked up a pair of victories last week against Hawkeye 10 Conference foes Clarinda and Council Bluffs St. Albert.
Glenwood pulled away from Clarinda in the fourth quarter to post a 64-53 win on the Rams’ annual Pink Out Night Tuesday.
Trailing 43-42 to start the fourth quarter, Glenwood outscored the Cardinals 22-10 in the final frame to put the game away.
Glenwood Coach Curt Schulte credited free throw shooting as a key to the Rams’ victory. The Rams were 17-of-22 from the charity stripe.
“The boys did a great job of taking care of the ball and making free throws down the stretch to seal the win against a very good Clarinda team,” Schulte said.
Ayden Gibson scored a game-high 17 points to pace the Rams’ balanced offensive attack. Casey Godbout tallied 15 points and Kayden Anderson scored a dozen. Anderson was 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Drew Schroeder also reached double figures with 11 points.
The Rams made 5-of-11 three-point attempts and shot 45.7% from the field. Clarinda shot 38.2%.
Anderson came up one rebound short of a double-double as he pulled down a team-leading nine rebounds. Payton Longmeyer recorded seven assists.
Creighton Tuzzio and Kyle Wagoner both scored 13 points to lead the Cardinals. Sam Kline pitched in 11.
Glenwood 64,
St. Albert 47
Free throw shooting, 14-for-17, was also a key to victory Thursday night as the Rams defeated St. Albert, 64-47.
The Rams led 13-10 after the first quarter but blew the game open by outscoring the Falcons 20-4 in the second period. Glenwood maintained its double-digit lead in the second half.
Schulte said he was particularly pleased with his squad’s defensive play against St. Albert.
“Our defensive effort was solid,” he said. “Payton Longmeyer was fantastic on face guarding St. Albert’s leading scorer Nick Ballenger. Payton held him to a season-low two points.”
Three Rams scored in double figures. Godbout led the way with 15 points, while Adam Severn and Gibson tallied 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Rams shot 44.2% from the field, compared to 30.4% for St. St. Albert.
Glenwood outrebounded the Falcons, 37-28, and had assists on 18 baskets.
Luke Wettengel scored 16 points and Jaxson Lehnen contributed nine to lead St. Albert.
With the pair of victories, Glenwood improved to 10-8 on the season and 7-3 in the Hawkeye 10. The Rams return to action Friday night when they host Denison.
