Glenwood boys soccer splits pair at ADM tournament

The Glenwood boys soccer team went 1-1 at the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Tournament this weekend in Adel.

The Rams (2-1) dropped their opener to the host Tigers 2-1 on Friday and then bounced back for a dominating 6-0 victory over Waverly-Shell Rock Saturday morning.

Glenwood coach Cort Lovato called the A-D-M loss a competitive match from start to finish.

“The match was fun to be a part of, however it didn’t turn out the way we wanted,” Lovato said. “The boys were able to control long stretches of the match and created opportunities to score. We will have to train more in the attacking third to become more clinical when the opportunities arise. We are still in the process of gelling five new starters. The boys will become a more cohesive unit after a match like this.”

The Tigers got on the board first, finding the back of the net in the 15th minute. Caden Johnson then answered for Glenwood two minutes later when was able to score off a set piece in the 17th minute.

ADM added what turned out to be the game winner in the 27th minute.

The Rams dominated possession in the 6-0 shutout of Waverly-Shell Rock, holding a 12 to 1 shots-on-goal advantage.

“The boys controlled the match from the start and were able to play very cohesive,” Lovato said. “It was a great response by the boys after the loss the night before. The back line was able to keep their first clean sheet of the season. Overall, a very good match, we still have some things to sort out.”

Johnson got Glenwood on the scoreboard unassisted in the 13th minute. Cameron King added another goal less than a minute later to make it 2-0 early. Andrew Abler scored in the 23rd minute to give the Rams a 3-0 goal at halftime.

King, Riley McEwen and Nolan Clark each added second half goals.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton 1

Caden Johnson and Cameron King scored two goals each for Glenwood in a 5-1 season-opening victory over Sergeant Bluff-Luton last Monday in boys non-conference soccer at the Glenwood Activities Complex.

The Rams got on the board early on Johnson’s penalty kick in the fourth minute. Just before the halftime, Virgino Rangel scored off an assist from Nolan Clark in the 36th minute.

Johnson picked up where he left off out of the break with a goal in 47th minute assisted by King. King then found the back of the net himself with goals in the 57th minute and then again in the 58th to put the Ram up 5-0.

Dylon Schaap put the Warriors on the board in the 76th minute.

Glenwood coach Cort Lovato felt his team played a controlled match. They outshot the Warriors 20 to 13 on goal and were aggressive in their attack.

“We were able to manipulate their back line at times, other times we were impatient in attack,” said Lovato. “The boys wanted to go, go go. They were able to sort it out and play more patiently. I would give this a B. We left a couple goals out there, and we gifted them their goal. We have to work on some things this week before the ADM tourney.”

Johnson and King both scored two goals and had one assist each for Glenwood. Clark assisted on two goals.
