Glenwood boys 10th, girls 11th at state cross country
Madeyln Berglund was 31st to lead the Glenwood girls at the state meet.
FORT DODGE - The Glenwood boys placed 10th and the girls were 11th at the Class 3A Iowa State Cross Country Meet at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course Friday in Fort Dodge.
The Ram boys, making their second straight state appearance, finished with 235 points, just a point behind ninth- place Decorah.
Dallas Center-Grimes, led by individual champion Aidan Ramsey, narrowly edged Marion for the team title 60 to 62. Ramsey ran a 15:36.8 for top individual honors.
Glenwood’s girls squad, in a fifth straight state meet appearance, placed 11th with 239 points. Solon was the girls Class 3A champion with 77 points. Paityn Noe, last year’s runner up, was the girls individual champion with a time of 18:12.74.
Bryant Keller had the Rams’ top individual finish with an 11th place showing. The sophomore ran a 16:31.91 to lead all Hawkeye 10 Conference boys state qualifiers.
Glenwood boys coach Todd Peverill thought his team ran well and were it not for a few stumbles – literally – a top tier team finish was in his team’s grasp. Andrew Smith and Liam Hays both took falls on the course and their times took a hit. Smith was able to battle back for 35th place Hays suffered a sprained ankle when he slipped on the downside of a hill and never quite recovered. Hays, the Rams’ No. 2 or 3 runner all year, finished 97th,
“Bryant ran a great race,” Peverill said. “He went out in good position and stayed there and the rest of the guys did well too, it was just unfortunate, just like all year long, we have something happen. If everything had went well, I think we would have been third or fourth like I thought we were.”
The Ram entered state ranked No. 5 in Class 3A.
The Glenwood girls were led by Madelyn Berglund’s 31st place finish time of 20:09.47. Breckyn Petersen added a 45th place finish, 74. Brooklyn Schultz was 74th and Rachel Mullennax 88th to give the Rams four runners among the top 100.
Glenwood girls coach Marissa Klindt said while the finish wasn’t what her team was hoping for she’s confident the experience will help down the road.
“Since we’re such a young team, it really was a good learning experience for us,” said Klindt. “After the meet, we talked about ‘What can we learn from this? What can we take into next year?’ We had a great discussion about that.”
The Glenwood boys also return a strong group for next season. Peverill’s varsity lineup included no seniors.
“This was a great experience for them,” Peverill said. “They’re all coming back so we should have a pretty good season for next year.”
