Former Ram Malcom wins top MIAA honor


Matt Malcom accepts the MIAA’s Ken Jones Award at a banquet in Kansas City earlier this month.

Former University of Nebraska-Kearney wrestler and 2016 Glenwood Community High School graduate Matt Malcom has been awarded the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association biggest award.

Malcom was named the male winner of the MIAA’s Ken Jones award in a June 6 ceremony in Kansas City. The honor recognizes the conference’s top student-athletes based on achievement in athletics, academics and community service.

Malcolm won the 165-pound national championship this season and helped the Lopers to the team championship. He finished the year with a 30-2 record, including a flawless 24-0 record against Division II opponents. Malcom was named the season’s Most Dominate Wrestler by the MIAA and National Coaching Association and was a finalist for Division ll’s National Wrestler of the Year.

The Glenwood native graduated Cum Laude in December of 2021 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, owning a 3.71 career GPA. He is a five-time NWCA All-Scholar Athlete and a five-time honoree of all three of the MIAA’s academic awards (Academic Honor Roll, Scholar-Athlete and Academic Excellence). He will be working at Bellevue East High School this coming fall, serving as head wrestling coach and Physical Education teacher.

UNK also took home the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Cup.
