Mills County Supervisor Sayers Ticketed For Underage Possession Of Alcohol

Mills County Supervisor Jack Sayers.

Jack Sayers, a member of the Mills County Board Of Supervisors, was ticketed Thursday for underage possession of alcohol.

According to a citation and complaint filed with the Mills County Clerk Of District Court,  Sayers, 20, allegedly possessed or purchased alcohol the night of Sept. 26. The alleged incident took place in Malvern and was investigated by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office at the request of Mills County law enforcement officials.

Sayers, who has an initial appearance scheduled for Dec. 4, issued the following statement to The Opinion-Tribune regarding the citation.

“I have cooperated with all authorities,” he said. “While I have been given the citation, I have not been found guilty or have had the chance to follow through with the allegation within the confines of the legal system. I am proud of my clean record and will respect the outcome of the legal process.”

Mills County Sheriff Greg Schultz said his office received an initial report regarding the matter and after consulting with Mills County Attorney DeShawne Bird-Sell, turned the investigation and potential prosecution over to Pottawattamie County officials.

“I think if I would have handled the investigation in house and it didn’t go right or it didn’t go the way people expected, whether it be that I over prosecute or whether it be that I under prosecute, it would have looked bad either way,” he said. “So, for transparency purposes, we brought in an outside agency to handle the investigation.

“Really, other than that initial phone call to the county and forwarding that initial repoort, myself and the county attorney’s office - DeShawne - have had nothing to do with the investigation.”
