Delayed, Extended Glenwood Aquatic Center Swim Season Ends

The 2024 swimming season at the Glenwood Aquatic Center wrapped up last weekend.

The Glenwood Aquatic Center had a later-than-normal start and finish to its summer swimming season in 2024.

Water loss issues delayed the opening of the facility until June 12, but the season was extended into Labor Day weekend to make up for the lost days in late May and early June. The final day of swimming at the aquatic center was Monday.

“We definitely stayed open longer than we typically do,” Glenwood City Administrator Amber Farnan said.”We usually close early in August. I’m note sure we’ll stay open that late again  - we’ll have to figure out the numbers, but we definitely wanted to do that this year since we opened a little later.”

Farnan said once the facility finally did open, things went smoothly.

“I think once we got open, it went really well. We had a really responsive staff that showed up,” she said. “I think it was a really good season. We didn’t have any really big issues. We were excited to have it open and basically have a full season.”
Farnan said the delayed opening of the facility did not have a major impact on membership sales or attendance figures.

“I don’t think it really did hurt it.,” she said. “I don’t think we even had anybody complain when they came and got their membership. They were just glad it opened.”

Attendance numbers did decline over the last month of the swimming season, which isn’t uncommon, Farnan noted.

Final attendance and financial numbers won’t be determined until later this month. Farnan said a report on the swimming season will likely be provided at the Sept. 26 city council meeting.

An inspection of the the facility and some repairs will likely be required  during the off season, particularly in the shallow play area where some water was being lost.
