City Eyes Replacing Fire Station

The Glenwood Fire Station.

The Glenwood City Council has been presented with estimated costs of what it would take to replace the city’s half-century old fire station.

The cost estimates, prepared by HGM Associates architectural and engineering firm, are for keeping the fire station  at its current location on South Walnut Street.

Renovating the two structures at the current facility and constructing  a third building to the west of the existing facility would cost an estimated $6.5 million, city council and public safety committee member Jeremy Rodman said.

Tearing down the two existing structures and building a new two-story structure would carry a price tag of $9.4 million.

“They gave us the pros and cons of all options,” Rodman said.

Conducting the feasability study is  only an initial step in addressing the city’s fire station issue. Other sites have been mentioned informally as possible locations for a new fire station, including the Glenwood Resource Center campus.

Rodman noted that funding for a new fire station would require approval from city taxpayers in a bond issue vote.
