A Glenwood grocery store will get a new name and new look later this year.

The No Frills store on the south side of Town Square at 423 Sharp St. will begin operating under the Family Fare banner this summer, according to officials from SpartanNash, the parent company for both the No Frills and Family Fare supermarket chains.

A timeline has not been finalized for the changeover but Jessica Wong, SpartanNash director of marketing, said the company is “aiming to make store updates this summer.” No specifics have been announced regarding possible physical changes or new amenities for customers.

“Family Fare stores have been a part of our local communities for more than 60 years – and while No Frills have a similar affinity within the Glenwood community, we look forward to offering some enhancements that come along with the Family Fare store format and banner,” Wong said.

Michigan-based SpartanNash operates retail stores in multiple states under several names, including Dan’s Supermarket, D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare, Family Fresh Market, Forest Hills Foods, Martin’s Super Markets, No Frills, SunMart, Supermercado Nuestra Familia and VG’s Grocery.

The Glenwood store has operated as a No Frills since 2007, the year the then independently-owned No Frills chain acquired Kaiman’s Supermarket from Jerry and Harold Kaiman.

The store has been an anchor on Glenwood’s Town Square for a century.
In 1921, Morris Kaiman, opened the store as Omaha Fruit and Grocery. His
sons, Robert and Louis, eventually took over the business. Robert’s sons, Jerry and Harold, took over their father’s portion of the business in 1967 and bought the remaining share after their uncle Louis retired in 1975.

“Kaiman’s No Frills” signage has remained on the building since the sale 16 years ago, but Kaiman’s won’t be part of the store’s new name.

“The new name will be Family Fare,” Wong said.

It’s unclear what the changeover will mean for current store employees.

“As a people first company, we value our associates who serve our store guests,” Wong said. “Any enhancements will be for the benefit of the community.”

Wong said SpartanNash will share additional information about the company’s plans for the store at a later date.
