Cell Phone Use Won't Be Allowed In East Mills Classrooms
East Mills Community School District students will not be allowed to use their cell phones in the classroom under a new policy approved by the East Mills administration and board of education.
The new policy for “communication devices” will become effective when the 2024-2025 academic year begins on Friday.
The policy being implemented states students will not be permitted to use their cell phones in the classrooms. Teachers will have a designated spot for phones to be placed when students enter the room at the start of class.
East Mills Middle School and High School students will be allowed to use their cell phones before school, after school, during lunch and between passing periods, according to the policy. East Mills Elementary School students will only be allowed to use their phones before and after school.
Parents who need to contact their child for emergency purposes during the school day may call the front office and the student will be notified. Students who need to place an emergency call or text during class, will need to obtain a pass to the the school office.
In announcing the policy on social media, district officials said they’re hopeful the new policy will cut down on distractions and keep students more focused on what is being taught in the classroom.
