Lucy passes milestone, Rams record 15th win

The  Glenwood girls rolled to their 15th win in 16 tries and Morgan Lucy became the Rams all-time leading scorer in a 54-38 victory over Harlan on Friday.

The Rams led 14-2 after a quarter – thanks to a pair of three pointers from Lexi Moreno and one each from Grace Newman and Lexi Fisher – and held the Cyclones to just two points until 4:39 remained in the second quarter. Glenwood out-scored the Cyclones 16-2 in the stretch.
“That got us going and that’s what we wanted to do,” said Glenwood coach Barry Loeffelbein. “You hold a team to two points in something like 11 minutes you’re playing great defense. I’m a little disappointed we didn’t put them away sooner because we weren’t finishing well and did shoot real great.”
The Rams led 28-11 at the half but missed plenty of “bunnies” said Loeffelbein. But Glenwood opened the third quarter on a 15-9 run to extend the lead out to 43-20. Loeffelbein substituted freely in the fourth.
Lucy, a 6-foot-3 senior who has signed to play basketball next season at Southwest Baptist University, scored just four first-half points before she got her historic bucket in the fourth quarter. Lucy finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds and surpassed former leading scorer Jennifer Portrey on the career scoring list with 1,176 points, one more than Portrey scored from 1993-1996.
“She’s been a great player for us,” Loeffelbein said of the four year starting center. “She’s been a force for us in the middle and she’s improved every year on offense and defense. She’s allowed us to a do a lot of different things on defense with her ability to patrol the paint and on offense, she’s proved she doesn’t have to lead us in scoring to be a force in there.”
The Rams hit 8-of-20 shots from behind the arc and got double-figure nights from Lexi Fisher (17 points) and Grace Newman (11 points).
Katrina Knudsen led Harlan with 12 points.
