Ena Pauline Nelson Krause, 99, Glenwood
Ena Pauline (Burwell) Nelson Krause died April 1, 2009, at Glen Haven Home in Glenwood. Funeral services were held Monday, April 6, 2009, at First Baptist Church in Glenwood. Rev. Steve Frazee and Rev. Richard T. Wheatley officiated. Interment was in the Glenwood Cemetery.
She was born on July 23, 1909, in Smith Center, Kan., to Clarence E. and Esta E. (Rorabaugh) Burwell. She graduated from Smith Center High School in 1927. She started her teaching career that fall and continued her education in the teaching field by attending Ft. Hayes Teachers College in Hayes, Kan., and years later at the University of Northern Iowa, as well as Los Angeles State and George Pepperdine in California. She taught four years in Kansas and three years in Strahan.
She married Boyd C. Nelson on Nov. 26, 1930. Daughter Ena Charlene was born in October of 1931. When Mr. Nelson entered the Navy during World War II, she and her daughter moved to Iowa to live with her parents. She worked at the bomber plant in Omaha until the war ended. She worked at the then Glenwood State School for about four years, attended UNI and then taught first grade in Strahan for three years. She and her husband moved to California in 1953, where she taught one year. After his death in 1956, she returned to Glenwood and worked in the personnel and business offices at the State School until she retired in 1984. She married Clifford Krause on Dec. 24, 1966.
In high school, she was in Glee Club, Dramatic Club, Booster Club, G.A.A., Independent Staff, Annual Staff, Cheer Leader, Freshman Class President and National Honor Society. As an adult, she belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron two terms, to the Rebekah Lodge No. 552, where she was Noble Grand, and to the Eagles Auxiliary. She joined the Congregational Church in Smith Center in 1923, was baptized in the Baptist Church at Great Bend, Kan., in 1940 and transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church in Glenwood when she moved there. She was an active member of that church, teaching Sunday School many years, and enjoyed being involved in two church circles. She and Mr. Krause also belonged to several clubs over the years such as a C.B. Club and various card groups.
In Mrs. Krause’s spare time, she enjoyed traveling, baking, knitting, embroidery, reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards and most of all, dancing. She and Mr. Krause danced often and regularly until she was over 90 years of age. After his death in 2003, she lived alone until she broke her hip and had other major surgery in 2004, requiring her to begin living at Glen Haven Home, where she resided until her death. Until the last year, she enjoyed the various activities and entertainment there.
Preceding her in death were her parents; both husbands; brother Harry Burwell; sisters Ilene Hannan; and Doris Longinaker. She is survived by her daughter Charlene and Tom Nutting of Glenwood; brother Don Burwell of Glenwood; four grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; several nieces; one nephew, and several great-nieces, nephews and many friends.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Glenwood. Peterson Mortuary of Glenwood was in charge of arrangements.
