Sherry Herron is stepping down as principal at Northeast Elementary School effective at the end of the month.

Herron is in her fifth year as principal. Her last day at Northeast is Dec. 31.

Herron declined an interview request but did say in an email that she will “miss the teachers, students and families that I have worked with.”

The email went on to say she was leaving “due to an opportunity that I felt fit the needs of my family better at this time.”

Glenwood  Community  School District Superintendent Devin Embray said a principal leaving in the middle of the school year is unusual but not unheard of.

Nancy Wright and  Julie McMullen were formally approved by the Glenwood Board of Education to fulfill Herron’s duties in a co-interim capacity through the end of the school year. Wright is an instructional teacher at Northeast and McMullen a special education teacher.

Herron arrived in Glenwood in 2016 after four years as the principal at Tarkio Elementary in Tarkio, Mo.

Embray said the district has already begun advertising for the position.
