City Closes On LDS Church Purchase

The city of Glenwood has finalized the purchase of the former Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints building on the northeast corner of Town Square.

Brian Kissel, the city’s director of finance, said closing for the $85,000 transaction took place Tuesday, Dec. 13. The purchase was approved by the city council following a public hearing on the matter in November.
The city council has also given its approval to a $200,000 line of credit / mortgage from Glenwood State Bank to not only fund the purchase of the building, but also assist with the expected remodeling costs. The city plans to relocate its existing city offices, council chamber, police department and Glenwood Municipal Utilities office to the new location. An invitation is also expected to be extended to the Glenwood Area Chamber of Commerce to house its office in the building.
Funds generated by the sale of the existing City Hall building at  107 S. Locust St. could also be earmarked for the renovation costs of the former LDS church. The renovation costs have been projected at $200,000.
Engineering firms interested in bidding on the renovation design work for the former LDS church are encouraged to contact City Hall.
