Wolverines move to 2-0 with rout of H.C.
Keegan Wederquist and Logan Currin combined for 48 points for the East Mills baskerball team in a 76-45 victory over Heartland Christian Saturday in Council Bluffs.
The Wolverines (2-0 overall, 2-0 in the Corner Conference) were in control from the start taking an 18-8 lead after a quarter. In the second half, East Mills out-scored the Eagles 43-24.
“We had a decided height advantage inside,” said East Mills coach Kevin Schafer. “They lost their two big inside guys from last year and they basically played with five guards and our guys were able to take advantage.”
The 6-foot-3 Wederquist led all-scorers with 25 points on 12-of-16 shooting. The senior also added 16 rebounds.
“He shot it a lot better percentage wise than he did the first game,” Schafer said. “And defensively we put him on a weaker offensive player so he could help us rebound and he did that.”
Currin added 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Noah Meyer chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds. For the night, the Wolverines shot 31-of-55 (56 percent) from the field.
The Wolverines are 2-0 on the season with both wins coming by an average of 35 points. But Schafer said his team will be challenged this week.
“We’re 2-0 and played two opponents we were better than but Fremont-Mills, from what I saw at the Jamboree, might be the best team in our conference. They’re quicker than us and they and we’re going to have to see if we can handle their pressure and up and down style of ball.”
