Underwood 53,
Fremont-Mills 30
UNDERWOOD - A cold night outside drifted inside Monday as the Fremont-Mills girls basketball team struggled shooting the ball in a 53-30 loss to Underwood.
The Knights (0-2) were ice cold from the field, hitting 11-of-62 shots for a season-low 17.7 percent in the loss.
“It was terrible,” said Fremont-Mills coach Rod Williams of his team’s shooting. “I don’t know if it was just an off night but we had a tough time even making layups all night long.”
After scoring 12 points in the opening frame – eight by leading scorer Macy Williams – the Knights had just 18 points over the final three quarters.
“I think the missed shots got us down,” Coach Williams said. “I thought we did OK when we went to man (to-man) and started playing full court. We were OK foul wise and we looked pretty good at halftime, but I thought we might be able to terrorize them a little more and get some points but it didn’t work out that way.”
The Eagles opened the quarter on a 13-5 run and led 25-17 at the break.
Allison Waters’ three point play put the Eagles up 35-22 with four minutes to go in the third quarter. The Knights never got any closer the rest of the way as the Eagles lead swelled to as many as 25 down the stretch.
“They did an excellent job of taking us out of the tempo we wanted to play,” Coach Williams said. “They wanted to slow us down and hang out on the offensive end and harass our rebounders, who are both pretty young, and it worked. That’s something we have to work on. We have to take better care of the ball when we rebound.”
The Eagles held a 49-31 rebounding edge and had three girls record at least 10 rebounds, led by Waters and Vandivort with 12 each. The two teams combined for 37 fouls and 39 free throws.
“I thought as far as the officiating went, it was our kind of game. They let us play. We just didn’t come to play.”
Macy Williams led the Knights with 13 points. Taryn Williams and Ariel Alexander each chipped in five points. Andrea McClary pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked two shots.
Rachel Landen led all scorers with 19 for Underwood.
