Vikings top East Mills for conference tourney title
Stanton claimed a second consecutive Corner Conference Basketball Tournament champ-ionship in a 66-47 win over East Mills Thursday night in Tabor.
Riley Story led East Mills with 15 points, while Pedro Ragazzo and Michael Schafer had 12 points each for the Wolverines. Nic Duysen pulled down five rebounds for East Mills and contributed a pair of assists, while teammates Michael Schafer and Anthony Rainey both tallied three rebounds. East Mills fell to 12-3 on the season, with all three losses coming against Stanton.
Despite turning the ball over a dozen times in the first half, the Vikings took a 26-19 lead into the half.
Stanton’s DonnieWeis was seven-of-11 from behind the 3-point arc, scoring a career-high 28 points. Three of his treys came in the third quarter, which helped the Vikings pull away from East Mills and seal the victory. Drake Johnson scored 18 points and collected a team-leading eight rebounds for the Vikings, who remained unbeaten at 15-0.
Johnson had 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists; Tyler Peterson eight points, five assists, two blocks; Easton Hultman five points; Keygan Day three points, three assists; Thomas Bates two points; Carter Johnson two points.
The Vikings totaled 16 assists on their 27 field goals.
East Mills opened Corner Conference Tournament play with a 67-33 triumph over Heartland Christian.
Story paced the Wolverines with 22 points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals, while Ragazzo posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Rainey pitched in 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, eight steals, and one block.
In Wednesday night’s semi-finals, East Mills came out of a first-half slump with a huge third-quarter run en route to a 55-34 victory over Sidney.
Ragazzo led the Wolverines with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Duysen finished the night with seven points and 11 boards.
The Wolverines travel to Woodbine Thursday night and host Griswold Friday night in Malvern.
