STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

Five wrestlers from Glenwood and three from East Mills remain in contention after one day at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines.

The Rams’ Trevor Anderson (126) and Matt Malcom won their opening matches to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round.

Anderson scored a 7-6 decision over Nate Lasher of Charles City while Malcom pinned Williamsburg’s Colton Lewis in 1:59.

East Mills went 3-1 in opening round matches with Josh Hopkins (152), Luke Stortenbecker (145) and Anthony Ossman (285) all winning their openers.

Hopkins pinned South Central Calhoun’s Brody Goodman in 3:27 to advance to the quarterfinals. Ossman scored a 5-1 win over Iowa Valley-Marengo’s Brody Goodman and Stortenbecker downed Sigourney-Keota’s Lane Boender 2-1.

The Rams’ suffered four first round losses but Anthony Sherry (170), Zach Haggstrom (195) and Caleb Sanders (285) all bounced back for consolation bracket wins.

Sherry, who dropped a 5-4 decision Garner-Hayfield-Ventura’s Connor Shaw, came back to win his consolation match and stay in contention for a medal with a pin of Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Sean Kellogg in :39.

Haggstrom suffered a major decision loss (12-4) to Izaak Shedenhelm in the opener before pinning Noah Minnick of MOC Floyd Valley in just 1:15 to advance in the consolation bracket.

The Rams’ Caleb Sanders dropped an opening round decision to Nathan Heath of ADM by fall before bouncing back in the consolation bracket to pin Sioux Center’s Elijah Van’T Hof in the closing seconds.

Glenwood 138-pounder Jordan Renshaw dropped his state opener to Dubuque Wahlert’s Anthony Dudek by major decision and then was pinned by Independence’s Drew Davis in the consolation bracket. Renshaw closes his sophomore season with a record of 27-16.

East Mills’ Nick Perkins (39-11) dropped his opening round match to Matt Naig of Sibley-Ocheyedan and then was eliminated in the consolation bracket when he was pinned by Quinton Casteel of Moravia in 2:38.

The quarterfinals and consolation bracket matches continued Friday afternoon in Des Moines.
