Glenwood 63,
Red Oak 24

On a cold night in Red Oak, the Glenwood girls’ shooting was anything but in a 63-24 victory in Hawkeye 10 Conference girls basketball Friday.

The Rams hit their first three shots from behind the arc and 7-of-14 in the first half as they raced out to an 11-0 lead that ballooned to a 30-point margin by halftime.

With not having played a game in two weeks, Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen was worried about how his team would open the game. Turns out, his worries were for not.

“We’ve had a lot of slow starts this year and had to work our way back in and kind of get some momentum before we get moving,” Rasmussen said of the Rams’ long hiatus do to inclement weather the last two weeks.

“We really probably overly worried about a slow start. And I guess whatever we did we’ve got to keep doing it because yeah, we started fast. We really put an emphasis on having a good start and making sure we share the ball, take quality shots in our first few possessions and not feeling forced. We got some wide-open looks and fortunately knocked them down.”

Red Oak coach Tristin Johnson said the Rams early hot shooting and his team’s sluggish start were not a good recipe for success.

“I thought we did a much better job tonight breaking the press than we did Tuesday at Atlantic, which was a key focus for us, so we’ll take that as a positive, but they definitely shot well and took it to us early on,” Johnson said.

Ram guard Maggie McChesney led the Rams’ outside onslaught. The freshman guard hit her first three jump shots and scored 10 points in the first quarter.

Time and again, the Rams’ ball movement created open looks against the Tigers’ zone defense. After taking a 21-6 out of the first quarter, Glenwood hit 4-of-8 from behind the arc in the second frame. Their lead was 36-6 with just over two minutes to go in the half.

“When you see the ball going in, everybody wants a shot, everybody wants a turn,” Rasmussen said.

The Rams’ shot 40 percent from the field for the game – 24-of-60 – including 10-of-31 from three. They also notched 18 assists on their 24 made field goals.

McChesney scored 20 of her career-high 28 points before halftime. She finished 11-of-21 from the field and 4-of-9 from long distance.

Lauren Hughes added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Rams. Neyla Nanfito chipped in 10 points and six assists.
