Three Rams punch tickets to state

Glenwood’s Matthew Beem earned a 17-1, technical fall win over Shenandoah’s Cole Scamman in the opening round at districts. Beem would go on to win his 126-pound bracket with an 11-7 win over No. 4 ranked Ethan Follmann of Atlantic in the finals to punch his ticket to state.

Vinny Mayberry, Matt Beem and C.J. Carter will be representing Glenwood at this week’s Iowa State Wrestling Tournament.

The Glenwood trio each won their respective weight classes a Saturday’s Class 2A District 2 wrestling meet in Glenwood.

The state meet runs Thursday through Saturday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Atlantic was the district champion at Glenwood. The Hawkeye 10 Conference champions crowned two individual district champions and qualified six wrestlers in all for state.

The Rams had six wrestlers reach districts but only Mayberry, Beem and Carter will move on. All three are repeat state qualifiers.

“We had some ups and downs,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “We were kind of expecting to get those three and to win their weight. Matt (Beem) wasn’t probably favored in his last match but he trained hard and came away beating the No. 4 ranked kid in the state pretty handily. And we lost some close ones too.”

Both Kellen Scott (145) and Tate Mayberry (152) both had five point leads in their opening round matches but couldn’t pull out wins.

“Hopefully that’s something that they can build on for the future,” Weber said.

There was nothing close about Vinny Mayberry and Carter’s paths to state. Both dominated their brackets. Mayberry, a sophomore, notched an 18-3 technical fall over Atlantic’s Josh Hass in his opener then needed just :34 second to pin Southwest Iowa’s Seth Ettleman in the finals.

“His mind is in a great place,” Weber said. “He’s only lost one match headed into state just like last year. When he was a freshman, he didn’t quite meet his goals at state. This year, he’s got one loss again and hopefully we see a different outcome. I like where his mind is at.”

Carter, a junior, pinned Creston’s Jagger Luther in the first period of his opening round match then picked up a dominating technical fall victory 21-6 over Atlantic’s Brenden Casey.

“He’s on a mission right now and he has goals,” Weber said. “He’s not just relying on his strength and physicality. He’s got good moves he’s added this year and I think we’re starting to see that.”

Beem earned an 11-7 win over No. 4 ranked Ethan Follmann of Atlantic in the 126-pound finals to punch his ticket to state.

“We only have three guys going to state but watching them work, I think we have three guys who can play pretty high on the podium,” Weber said.

Vinny Mayberry (39-1) kicks off the Rams’ pursuit of state hardware against Assumption Davenport’s Jacob Maes (26-8). Beem (21-3) will face Derrick Bass (19-5) of Davenport Assumption in the 126-pound opener and Carter (48-2) re-matches with his district finals opponent, Atlantic’s Brenden Casey (37-21), in his opener.

The Class 2A portion of state opens the tournament on Thursday beginning at 9 a.m.

Rams fall in regional dual opener

The Glenwood wrestling team’s dual season came to an end last Tuesday with a loss to Atlantic in the Class 2A, Regional Team Dual Wrestling Meet in Creston.

The Rams dropped a 45-29 decision to the Trojans. Atlantic, which entered ranked No. 11 in the state, went on to upset host Creston 29-26 to earn a spot in the state dual tournament.

Tyler Boldra (160 pounds), C.J. Carter (195), Trent Patton (220), Vincent Mayberry (113), Reese Fauble (138) and Kellan Scott (145) all picked up dual wins for Glenwood.

Carter (46-2) picked up his 33rd pin of the season in the dual to break Mitch Artist’s school-record of 32 set in 2006.

“That’s a great accomplishment for him,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “I give them weekly updates on their takedowns and falls and he’s been chasing that. To have 33 falls right now is pretty impressive.”
