Collin Steele’s back-to-back three pointers to open overtime helped lifts Glenwood to a 74-72 win over Council Bluffs St. Albert in a Hawkeye 10 Conference boys basketball thriller last Monday in Council Bluffs. “That was great momentum for us to get a quick six-point lead,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte after the game. “Those were huge shots for Collin.”
The Rams led by as many as 11 points in the first half and extended that margin to 13 midway through the third quarter when the Falcons’ Nick Ballenger sparked a comeback.
Ballenger’s fourth three-pointer of the final quarter and a half cut the Rams’ lead to 57-55 with 5:14 to go in the game. Glenwood’s Jack Johnson would answer with a three of his own on the ensuing possession to push the lead back to 60-55 but the Falcons would close regulation on a 10-5 run to force the extra frame.
Right off overtime tip-off, Steel got loose on the wing and knocked down his first three of the game after opening 0-for-3 behind the arc. Twenty-six seconds later, he hit again from nearly the same spot to push the Rams ahead 71-65 with 3:19 to go.
St. Albert would not go away, however. A layup and a pair of free throws by Joe Hughes and a layup and free throw by Owen Marshall cut it to 73-72 with :57.4 to go.
Glenwood would leave the door open with a turnover with :30.1 to go but both of the Falcons’ shots would clang off. The Rams’ Ayden Gibson would hit 1-of-2 from the line to seal the win.
“They’re a really good team and its tough to win on the road in the Hawkeye 10, especially here,” Schulte said. “Our kids showed a lot of fight and grit, especially coming off a tough overtime loss Friday night. To bounce back on the road and get an overtime win, I couldn’t ask for anything more from these guys.”
After scoring 17 of his game-high 26 in an 10 minute stretch of the second half, Schulte’s defense clamped down on the 6-foot-1 guard in crunch time. The junior was held scoreless the final four minutes of regulation and all of the overtime.
“We changed up personnel on him a little bit,” Schulte said of the defensive adjustments. “We tried to mix guys up on his. We put Jack (Johnson) on him, Drew (Schroeder) took him. We brough in the freshman (Haze Stephens). All three did a great job on him.”
All five starters scored in double-figures for Glenwood, with Gibson leading the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson added 17 points and nine boards while Cole Staudt chipped in 13, Steele 11 and Schroeder 10.
Marshall scored 16 points to go with Ballenger’s big night.
