Rams win in homecoming rout

Glenwood’s Payton Longmeyer hauled in three passes for 37 yards and a touchdown in the Rams’ 40-6 homecoming victory Friday.

Glenwood scored early and often in the first half as the Rams built a big lead and then coasted to a 40-6 homecoming victory over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln before a capacity crowd at Ram Memorial Field Friday night.

The Rams dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball as they built a 40-0 advantage before halftime. Glenwood coach Cory Faust said the lopsided win was his squad’s most complete performance of the season.

“I thought both sides of the ball played well,” he said. “That being said, I’m sure there are some things we can clean up. It’s never as bad as you think and it’s never as good either, so we’ll keep trying to get better.

“We always like to win. Obviously, homecoming is a big deal here in Glenwood. It’s fun to treat the fans to a win, for sure.”
Offensively, the Rams used a balanced attack to keep the Lynx defense on its heels.

Running back Tate Mayberry, who finished the game with 128 yards on 15 carries, was the workhorse on the Rams’ 61-yard opening drive. He finished the drive off with a 15-yard scamper.

Quarterback Kayden Anderson teamed up with Cody Krause for a 38-yard pass complete to set up the Rams’ next score, a 7-yard run by CJ Carter.

A 26-yard burst by Mayberry set up the Rams’ third TD – an 8-yard scramble by Anderson on fourth down.

Glenwood’s final three touchdowns of the second quarter (and the game) all came via the pass. After hooking up with Krause on a 40-yard completion, Anderson found paydirt with a 7-yard scoring pass to Payton Longmeyer to put the Rams up 26-0.

On their next drive, Anderson completed a pair of long passes to Krause before connecting with Renner Bardsley on a 17-yard strike.

An interception by Nolan Clark set up the Rams’ final touchdown in the closing seconds of the half – a 27-yard aerial from Anderson to Krause.

With the clock running continuously in the second half, the Rams substituted freely. The Lynx scored their only TD in the final minute of the contest on a 9-yard completion from quarterback Brady Watts to Karsyn Chambliss.

The Rams, who improved to 2-1 with the win, finished the night with 207 yards rushing and 229 passing.

“Being able to run the ball helps,” Faust said of the Rams’ productive night on offense. “Having CJ Carter back, although we really limited him a lot just to make sure he’s healthy for next week, changes the dynamic. Casey Godbout, moving to the tight end position and us being a little bit more diverse with our formations has really made a big difference, too.”

Anderson completed 11 of 21 pass attempts for 216 yards. His top target was Krause who hauled in four receptions for 115 yards.

Defensively, Logan Hughes was the Rams leading tackler (4.5).

The Rams hit the road this week for a non-district battle with Harlan, a perennial powerhouse and defending Class 3A state champions.

We’re going to have to play well. Harlan’s really good, obviously – defending state champs, a really good team,” Faust said. “But, I like our team. If we play well and prepare well and control the things we can control, I think we can compete with any team in the state.”
