Rams fall to Fremont, Neb. in ‘Border Battle’

Glenwood’s Jenna Hopp drives to the basket for two of her game-high 24 points in the Rams’ 67-50 win over Council Bluffs St. Albert Thursday.

COUNCIL BLUFFS - Fremont, Neb. used a 22-11 third quarter scoring run to pull away from Glenwood for a 72-57 win Saturday in a game billed as a “Border Battle” at the Mid-America Shootout in Council Bluffs.
The Class 4A, No. 3 ranked Rams (14-4 overall, 10-0 in the conference) went shot-for-shot with the Tigers, who entered the game ranked No. 3 in Nebraska’s largest class, the first quarter. Glenwood led 21-20 after the opening frame.
“We got off to a great start,” said Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen. “We shot the ball well, we played with them possession for possession. There weren’t a lot of missed shots that first quarter so we didn’t gain a lot of ground nor did they.”
But as the game wore on, the Rams didn’t hit a quite the same clip and the Tigers, they took advantage.
Fremont led by eight at the half and that lead quickly swelled to 63-44 by the end of the third quarter.
“Once we got into the game, their misses, when they had them, they seemed to get second and third chances,” Rasmussen said. “A lot of long misses for long rebounds. It wasn’t our best rebounding effort.”
Jenna Hopp scored 27 points to lead the Rams. The junior guard also surpassed 1,000 career points in the game.
Madison Camden chipped in 13 for Glenwood.
The Tigers’ Taylor McCabe, who entered averaging nearly 21 points per game, finished with 22 points. The senior guard is committed to play at Iowa.

Glenwood 67,
C.B. St. Albert 50
Glenwood erased a two-point halftime deficit with a 34-13 third quarter run in a 67-50 victory over Council Bluffs St. Albert in girls Hawkeye 10 Conference play Thursday.
“We didn’t really change our press but we made some tweaks to it,” said Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen of his team’s third quarter adjustments. “We wanted to put more pressure on them and be more aggressive and that seemed to create some confusion and certainly created some turnovers and some easy buckets. That was the big difference.”
The Class 4A, No. 2 ranked Rams (clinched the Hawkeye 10 Conference title with a perfect 10-0 record. This is the third straight conference crown for Glenwood.
Jenna Hopp scored 24 points and Madison Camden 19 to lead Glenwood.
Missy Evezic and Lena Rosloniec led St. Albert with 15 points each.

Millard South 62,
Glenwood 43

The two teams were different, the flow of the game less frenetic and there were 85 less points scored but the result was the same.

Nebraska Class A No. 1 Millard South used its defense and sporadic fast break opportunities to pull away from Glenwood in a 62-43 victory Tuesday in Omaha to stay unbeaten on the season.

The Patriots won in Glenwood last season 107-83, setting a Nebraska single game scoring record.

On Tuesday, the Iowa Class 4A, No. 3 ranked Rams were determined to keep the pace more manageable. They led 7-4 midway through the first quarter when the Patriots turned it on and slowly began leaking out for transition buckets. They scored the final nine points of the opening quarter and then scored the first seven points of the second quarter.

Millard South took a 32-20 lead into halftime and Glenwood looked out-of-synch against the Patriot’s full-court pressure that forced 14 first half turnovers.

“We just couldn’t get into a rhythm,” said Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen. “I thought the possessions we did, when we had a longer possession, we did get good looks. We tried to push the ball and when we didn’t get what we liked, we had some probably ill-advised possessions instead of being patient with it. That was the game plan we talked about. I don’t think we got it done consistently enough. Too many turnovers.”

The Patriots’ lead swelled to 20 points midway through the third quarter. The Rams never got closer than 16 the rest of the way.
Rasmussen saw a much different game than last season – even if the result was the same.

“I’m proud of the girls effort,” he said. “Regardless of what the scoreboard said I thought we played pretty tough possession to possession with them. We let them maybe have a few too many run out baskets, typically off turnovers, or missed shots or second chance opportunities and those three things seemed to be our Achilles heal tonight.”

Khloe Lemon came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points for the Patriots. Mya Babbitt added 12 and Cora Olsen, who scored 37 in the last meeting with Glenwood, had 13.

The Patriots’ schemed to spread the Rams out defensive and use the dribble drive for a layup or a kick out. They’re a tough guard, Rasmussen admitted.

"They’re a good basketball team that has to knock their shots down and they knocked them down,” he said. “It wasn’t necessarily our plan to play man all night but that’s how it ended up. I thought our girls did a good job for the most part in our man-to-man defense but too many second chances, too many turnovers and too many runouts in transition for them.”

Jenna Hopp led the Rams with 13 points but was held to just two in the second half. Madison Camden added 12 and Brynlee Arnold six.
