Rams eighth at state wrestling duals

Glenwood poses with its eighth place trophy at the Iowa State Wrestling Duals in Xtream Arena in Coralville Saturday.
The Glenwood wrestling team placed eighth at the Iowa State Wrestling Duals in Coralville Saturday.
Making its first appearance at state duals since 2006, the Rams dropped its opener to top seeded Decorah 51-21 and battled in every dual but finished 0-3 on the day with their other losses coming to West Delaware 41-32 and Algona 39-37.
Eddyville-Blakesburg downed Décorah 37-33 to win the Class 2A state duals championship.
“We wrestled hard,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “We got bonus points in some areas and then we had swing matches against West Delaware that we had mapped out and we didn’t win any of those and we needed to win two, but it was still a competitive dual.
The last dual it kind of fell apart in the middle. Six weights in a row we either got pinned or teched (technical fall).
“If you want to be a good dual team you have to be able to eliminate those bonus points from the other team. I think the kids were excited to be there. It’s the state duals, you don’t run into light competition there.”
The Rams chance at early success against Decorah was hurt with a pair of overtime losses.
Both Ace Cochrane (106 pounds) and Quin Lane brawled with their Viking opponents to the end only to go down late.
“Out of three teams the wrestled, we put up the second most points,” Weber said of the match against Decorah. “That was good. If we could have had those two overtimes matches it could have gotten some momentum going for us. They’re a tough team and deserved to be in the finals. I was happy with how we competed with them.”
The Rams’ two biggest wrestlers – Mason Koehler and Drake Buthe – came up big with perfect 3-0 records in Coralville.
Koehler was befitting of his top ranking at 215-pounds. The senior Northern
Colorado recruit notched three pins in his matches – none lasting than 38 seconds - with his capper coming over No. 9 ranked Talyn Rummel of Algona.
The No. 6 ranked Buthe (285) also had three falls on his day.
Koehler and Buthe also made history. Both snapped the school-record for pins in a season with 37 currently. Koehler previous shared the record of 35 with former Ram and current Iowa State wrestler C.J. Carter.
Brody Black (120) and Joseph Leick (126) were also 3-0 on the day for the Rams.
Black picked up his 100th dual victory with his pin of Decorah’s Meison Tollefson and Leick.
Leick, ranked No. 2 in the state in his weight class, had one fall and won by decision over Decorah’s No. 12 ranked Mason Glotfelty, 8-4.
Nile Lundvall (175) was 1-2 for the Rams but Weber said the junior battled in every match.
“It might not have showed up in the win column, but he wrestled a lot of tough kids and looked really good,” Weber said.
Lundvall won his final match by major decision over Algona’s Taevyn Zinnel, the No. 8 ranked 165-pounder who moved up a weight to 175 at state duals.
“I was really impressed with his performance overall,” Asche said.
The Rams aren’t going to have long to lick their wounds. Glenwood hosts the Class 2A state qualifying meet Saturday.
“Duals and state individual are different,” Weber said. “The sun will come up (tomorrow) and they’ll be ready to get after it Saturday and try to make it to state. You have to have quick turnaround in wrestling. We’ll be working this week individually to be ready for the kids in their weight class and try and get as many through as we can.”
