Rams dominate at Carroll Early Bird co-ed

Glenwood’s Pauley Simonetti (right) helped the Rams to a golf medal finish in the distance medley relay at the Carroll Early Bird Co-ed Meet Thursday.

The Glenwood boys and girls combined to win 18 events and sweep the team titles at the Carroll Early Bird Track and Field Co-ed Relays Thursday in Carroll.

The Ram boys won nine events while tallying 175 points to easily outpace runner up Boone’s 86 points.

“Our first outdoor meet couldn’t have gone better, with excellent March weather and outstanding performances across the board,” said Glenwood boys coach Mark Starner. “The team has stepped up admirably to fill gaps left by last year’s graduates. While we still have areas for growth and some inexperience to work through, this promising start suggests an exciting 2025 season ahead if we maintain this level of effort.”

The boys snagged four individual gold medals and then won five of the seven relays on their way to the team title.

The Rams swept the sprint events with Tristan Ludwig (100-meters), Victory Cruz (200), Dylan Pitzen (400) and Haze Stephens (800) all winning gold. Pitzen added a second gold in the 400-meter hurdles.

Glenwood’s sprint medley, distance medley, 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays all captured gold. Ludwig anchored both the 4x200 and 4x100 to gold.

Glenwood’s girls were no less impressive in the outdoor debut, winning nine golds of their own. They easily out-paced Harlan with 137 points to 105.

The Rams grabbed six relay golds, winning the sprint medley, shuttle hurdle, 4x100, 4x200, meter, 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays.

The Rams’ Breckyn Petersen (400-meter hurdles), Haylee Hughes (800) and Grace Berglund (3,000) added individual gold medals.

“It was a really good night,” said Glenwood girls coach Jordan Bueltel. “It was great to have the weather cooperate in what was a gorgeous night in Carroll.  I think once they got rid of the jitters of it being the first outdoor meet they really competed well.”

Bueltel was most impressed with his team’s relay work.

“We have some new faces and some old faces in different spots this year and it really was a nice starting point for us,” he said.  “A lot of the same girls that have been big for us in the past really had nice nights but what stood out the most to me last night was some of the next pieces that had really good nights for us.”

The coach pointed to Haylee Hughes, who had struggled with injuries her first two years in the program, but won the 800-meters and a ran strong leg on the gold medal winning 4x800-meter relay.

“She is now healthy and really looking like she’s going to be a big piece in our 400s and 800s,” Bueltel said.

Caitlin Hebel was also another athlete Bueltel thought made a good impression in several relays.

“She hasn’t been out for track in high school before, but she has really jumped in and also been a big addition to our 400 and 800 crew.”
