Rams’ Koehler second at CB Wrestling Classic

Glenwood’s Mason Koehler, shown here against Council Bluffs St. Albert’s Andrew Tamayo, reached the 215-pound finals at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic.

Glenwood’s Mason Koehler and Drake Buthe picked up medals at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs Friday and Saturday.

Koehler reached the finals and placed second at 215 pounds while Buthe was third in the heavyweight division.

The Rams placed 24th out of 41 teams from Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Minnesota competing. Lincoln (Neb.) East was the team champion with 418.5 points.

“Our young guys got a new experience and got to see some high level kids which is always nice,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “I think we showed up pretty well. Mason got second and wrestled a really tough match in the finals against a really good kids. And Drake has come a long way in in one year. Hopefully our young kids learn something from of their mistakes and getter better from here.”

Koehler reached the finals of the gold bracket with a pair of pins a medical forfeit.

Koehler dropped his first match of the season in the finals to South Sioux City’s Tony Palmer by a 7-2 decision. Palmer is a top rated, defending Nebraska state champion at a 215 pounds and highly regarded national recruit.

“He’s a D-I wrestler and Mason was right there with him,” Weber said. “We just needed to finish a few more shots.”

After dropping his semifinals match to Joe Constable of Fort Dodge 7-2, Buthe, the Rams’ heavyweight, pinned Waukee Northwest’s Henry Mohr in the first round of the third place match.

“Drake lost in a tough semifinal match,” Weber said. “He’s wrestled that kid a few times in the offseason. At the end of the match he forced it it a little bit and got taken down. He’ll learn from that. That third place match he used some of the free style Greco (wrestling) he did this summer and it showed up with him throwing some guys in a few matches.”

The Washburn, Kan. girls won the team title with 501.5 points. Glenwood’s girls were 29th with 117.5 points.

Kasadie Pratt notched a fourth place finish in the 190-pound class to lead the Rams.

Rams 3-0 at
St. Albert quad

Glenwood notched wins over Harlan, Southwest Iowa and host Council Bluffs St. Albert at a quadrangular in Council Bluffs last Tuesday.

The Rams picked up victories over the hosts 45-24, Harlan 57-30 and Southwest Iowa 72-12.

Glenwood coach Tucker Weber was happy with the three dual wins but the coach seemed most pleased with his team’s attitude during the match.

“We had a real team atmosphere,” he said. “Our kids were really encouraging to everyone on the team, not just their buddies. To me, that says a lot about our team that we’re excited for each other. It also makes a dual atmosphere a lot more enjoyable.”

Brody Black (113 pounds), Benn Christensen (126/132), Connor Wear (138), Nile Lundvall (175), Jacob Aust (190), Mason Koehler (215) and Drake Buthe (285) all went 3-0 on the night.
