Ram trio 3-0 on first day at state wrestling
Three matches, three pins, 3-0.
The Glenwood wrestling team got off a to perfect start at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines this morning.
The Rams’ Vinny Mayberry (113-pounds), Matthew Beam (126) and C.J. Carter (195) all pinned their first round opponents in the Class 2A portion at Wells Fargo Arena.
“We were planning on three wins,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “We didn’t know they’d all come by fall. That’s an added bonus. They all looked good. Vinny and C.J. pinned their guys in the first period and Matt was in the second period.”
Carter (49-2) needed just 1:18 to pin his first round opponent, Brenden Casey of Atlantic.
Mayberry (40-1) also picked up a first period fall of Jacob Maies of Davenport Assumption.
Beam (22-4) recorded a fall of Davenport Assumption’s Derrick Bass in his match.
All three of Glenwood’s state qualifiers are making their second trip to state. There’s no first time jitters or nerves with these three, Weber said. All three were aggressive and all three wrestled their matches.
“That’s their style,” Weber said of the trio’s aggressive attack. “They’ve all been here before. That helps. Some kids get to the state tournament the first time and kind of get nervous. These three have all been here so that helps them.”
In Friday’s quarterfinals, Mayberry will meet Webster City’s Carson Doolittle (37-3), Beam will face Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Bo Kadam (43-5) and Carter meets Gabe Terwee (42-5) of West Liberty. Class 2A wrestling resumes Friday at 9 a.m.
