Panthers hold off Glenwood in 9-3 victory

Clarinda’s bats came alive in the fourth inning, plating three runs in that inning and four more in the fifth to pull away from Glenwood in an 8-3 victory in Hawkeye 10 Conference softball Thursday in Glenwood.

The Rams (8-4 overall, 3-1 in the conference) led 1-0 after three innings before the Cardinals put some hits together in the fourth. Glenwood coach Ryan Koch said his team never seemed to find its rhythm.

“This was one of those nights you have in sports where a lot of things don’t go your way and a lot of things seem to go right for the other team,” said Koch. “They battled at the end of the game but we need to come into every conference game with a ton of energy to start. We can’t take anyone for granted in this conference because anyone can beat anyone in this conference.”

Andi Woods tossed a complete game for Clarinda in the win. She gave up six hits and zero earned runs while fanning three.

Jerzee Knight had three hits and drove in four runs to lead Clarinda at the plate.

Five of the six Ram hits were singles and they also commit ed three errors defensively.

“This was definitely not one of our best hitting nights,” Koch said. “We got in front of balls and we weren’t making solid contact.”

Elizabeth Thiesen drove in two runs and McKenna Wilkes singled to drive in another run.

Allison Koontz took the loss in the circle after allowing six hits and seven earned runs while striking out seven.

Allison Koontz doubled, homered and drove in three runs and picked up the win in the circle for Glenwood in a 6-5 Hawkeye 10 Conference softball victory last Tuesday.

Koontz was 2-for-4 at the plate while tossing 3 1/3 innings of hitless softball while striking out six.

“She’s in the zone right now and playing really tough,” Koch said. “We’re really proud of the work she’s putting in, battling a couple injuries. She’s shown so much grit in the circle and how she’s hit the ball. She’s been a big motivator for all of us.”

Faith Weber had a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Rams.

Nicole Bond took the loss for the Tigers. The sophomore gave up nine hits and six earned runs.

Jaydin Lindsay had three hits to lead Red Oak at the plate.

Rams sweep Titans

Glenwood picked up a pair Hawkeye 10 Conference softball road victories with a double-header sweep at Council Bluffs Lewis Central last Monday.

The Rams won the opener 12-6 and then won the nightcap 10-0 in what head coach Ryan Koch called one of his team’s “best games we’ve played this year.”

“These were two big wins for us,” Koch said. “The first game we had to work for it but the girls stayed relaxed and hit it really well. That fun and relaxation continued into game two and the kids really got after it. Anytime you can go to Lewis Central and get two wins is really impressive.”

n the two games combined, the Rams smacked 21 hits and got two strong pitching performances from Alli Koontz.

Koontz scattered four hits and struckout seven in the game one win. She also helped her own case by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and four RBIs. In game two, Koontz gave up five hits and two earned runs in the complete-game win.

“She threw really well,” Koch said. “She only gave up one earned run. She was on fire.”

Sara Kolle had four hits and drove in a run in the her two games.

Aubrey Albers had three hits and Elizabeth Thiesen homered and drove in three runs.

Emerson Coziahr took the game one loss for the Titans after allowing five hits and six runs. Cami Damgaard was credited with the game two loss. The sophomore allowed 11 hits and seven earned runs.
