Mayberry wins title at Bobcat Classic

Vinny Mayberry, shown here earlier this season, won the 113-pound championship at the Bobcat Classic in Basehor-Linwood, Kan. Saturday.
Glenwood took seven wrestlers to the Bobcat Classic in Basehor-Linwood, Kan. this week and four came home with medals.
Vinny Mayberry was the Rams’ top place winner after taking the title at 113-pounds. C.J Carter (195 pounds) added a second-place finish and Briten Maxwell (120) and Trent Patton (220) added sixth-place finishes.
“We wanted to see some other competition and kids we don’t see and sure we wrestled three or four Underwood kids but overall I think we competed hard,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber.
Underwood, with four individual champions, won the team title with 227 points. The Rams finished seventh as a team with 89 points.
Mayberry, the Class 2A No. 5 ranked 113-pounder in the state, pinned his two Friday opponents and then followed that up with an impressive pin of Mill Valley’s Robert Hickman in the second period to secure his title on Saturday.
“He looked really good,” Weber said. “I think that loss last weekend really sparked him and he’s been working hard to reach his goals this year.”
Carter, the top ranked 195-pounder in Iowa, was the runner-up at the Bobcat Classic. The junior notched three falls in dominating fashion to reach the finals where he met Sean Carroll of St. Thomas Aquinas in the finals.
Carroll, the No. 3 ranked wrestler in his class in Kansas, went on to win the match 3-2.
“He ran into a tough kid,” Weber said of Carter’s finals matchup. “That kid was tough to score on but that was a good match for C.J. to wrestle and get pushed a little bit.”
Patton reached the Saturday semifinals before dropped his fifth place match to Tonganoxie’s Hunter Benedict by a 5-1 decision.
“One little mistake in the semifinals cost him,” Weber said. “He’s still young. He needs to learn to battle back from some losses. He ended up sixth and that’s pretty good at that tournament.”
Maxwell finished sixth after a suffering a fall to Anderson County’s Brayden Hermreck in the first period.
“He had a rough second day but he made the podium,” Weber said. “He’s getting better every week.”
The Rams are back in action Thursday with a Hawkeye 10 Conference dual at Atlantic.
