Maryville offense too much for Rams

Glenwood’s Caden Johnson led the Rams with 20 points in Tuesday’s win over Harlan.

Maryville, Mo. escaped Glenwood with a 83-75 victory over the Rams in a boys non-conference basketball tilt Saturday.

The two teams combined for 50 first quarter points in a high-scoring affair. The Spoofhounds used a 21-9 second quarter run to pull away from the Rams (9-4 overall, 5-3 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) in the win.

“I wasn’t happy with our defense,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte. “We gave up 83 points. That’s too many. We need to do more to slow them down and get stops.”

Derek Quinlin was a hard cover for the Rams all game long. The senior guard scored 26 points to lead all scorers.

“He’s a very good player,” Schulte said. “He was good off the dribble and he could hit from range. Very good player.”

Maryville teammates Caden Stoecklein chipped in 16 and Keaton Stone and Peyton McCollum added 10 each.

Risto Lappala and Caden Johnson posted 16 points each to lead Glenwood. Gavin Schau added 12 and Adam Severn 10.

Kuemper Catholic 76,
Glenwood 70

Michael Kasperbauer poured in 33 points to lead Kuemper Catholic to a 76-70 win over Glenwood in boys Hawkeye 10 Conference basketball Friday in Carroll.

The Class 2A, No. 6 ranked Knights (11-1 overall, 5-0 in the conference) pulled away in the fourth quarter for the win.

“It was really a back-and-forth game but that’s a tough place to play,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte. “They had a good crowd and they got behind them and it made it tough. They’re a good team. They’re quick, athletic team.”

Logyn Eckheart paced Glenwood with 18 points and Risto Lappala added 12 points.

Glenwood 47,
Harlan 44

Glenwood used a 16-6 third quarter run to pull away from Harlan and pick up a season sweep of the Cyclones last Tuesday in a 47-44 victory.

Rams’ coach Curt Schulte praised his team’s effort after the win – on both ends of the court.

“I was proud of our whole team with their energy level,” Schulte said. “The bench, the guys on the floor, they were flying around, getting loose balls. We said before the game two things are going to win this game for us: defense and rebounding the basketball. And I thought we did a great job in both those areas.”

The Rams held the Cyclones to a season-low 47 points on 32.1 percent shooting – 17-of-53 – and held a 43 to 31 rebounding edge.

The Rams (9-2 overall, 5-2 in the conference) built a 22-14 at the half before the Cyclones (6-3 overall, 3-1 in the conference) rallied to tie the score midway through the third quarter. Glenwood then responded by closing out the frame on a 16-6 run and take a 40-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Cyclones chipped away at the Rams’ lead in the fourth, closing to within 45-43 with :31.8 to go but could get no closer.

Risto Lappala and Gavin Schau each hit free throws in the finals second to ice the Rams sixth straight win.

Glenwood didn’t shoot it much better than Harlan – 34.5 percent – but thanks to heavy dose of pick-and-roll and the dribble drive of Caden Johnson, the offensewas effective.

“They switch a lot so we tried to get to the basket and maybe slip to the basket here and there,” Schulte said. “That was big part of game plan tonight.”

Johnson was the beneficiary of that scheme. The senior guard hit 8-of-19 shots, scored 20 points and dished six assists.

“He’s a leader,” Schulte said of Johnson. “He wanted the ball in his hands when the money was on the table and I’m super proud of his effort.”

Lappala and Logyn Eckheart added eight points each.
