Knights edges Sidney 70-66 in Corner

Paxten VanHouten led Fremont-Mills with 18 points in Friday’s 70-66 win over Sidney

Four Fremont-Mills players scored in double-figures as the Knights downed Sidney 70-66 in Corner Conference boys basketball Friday in Tabor.

The win gives the Knights (10-7 overall, 4-2 in the Corner Conference) the season sweep of the Cowboys. Both games were decided by a combined six points.

“We knew this game would be a test of our mental toughness after coming off of a very busy week of challenging games, and I’m proud of the way that our guys battled tonight,” said Fremont-Mills coach Chelsea Zimmerman. “We had a lot of contributors scoring on the floor, and that’s what we like to see. I was also extremely proud of the way that Luke Madison and Logan Jahnke stepped up to defend Grant Whitehead down the line.”

Paxton VanHouten scored 18 points to lead Fremont-Mills. Owen Thornton added 16, Taylor Reed pitched in 14 and Ike Lemonds added 11 points.

Whitehead topped Sidney with 19 points.

Woodbine 78,
Fremont-Mills 44

Woodbine used a 19-2 second quarter run to build a 22-point halftime lead and cruise to a 78-44 victory over Fremont-Mills in non-conference boys basketball Thursday.

The combination of a cold shooting night – 34.1 percent – and 17 turnovers were too much for the Knights to overcome against the Tigers (11-5).

“We cannot afford to have effort mistakes and we cannot afford to have those stupid passing mistakes that we know we’re better than,” said Fremont-Mills coach Chelsea Zimmerman. “We know coming out we’re going to come up against a team that we’re going to do everything right against and they’re going to hit shots from the perimeter, but we cannot come out with effort mistakes and a lack of focus.”

The Tigers made few mistakes in winning seven of their last eight games. They hit a season-high 12 threes, led by as many 38 in the victory and had four players score in double-figures.

Owen Thornton was the lone Knights to score in double-figures with 12 points. Ike Lemonds added seven and J.T. Mahaney and Caleb Branch six each.

“I saw some positive things from our kids, effort things where we dug deep and good attacks and dishes,” Zimmerman said. “But unfortunately, that doesn’t erase our turnover mistakes and transition mistakes.”

Brody Pryor led the Tigers with 19 points.
