Glewood sweeps Hawkeye 10 titles

Glenwood’s Danika Arnold won the 200 and 400-meters at the Hawkeye 10 Conference meet.

The Glenwood girls and boys are Hawkeye 10 Conference Track and Field champions.

The Rams topped the field to sweep the team titles at the conference track meet in Shenandoah.

The title is the boys’ first since 2015 and the program’s 19th all time.

Glenwood tallied 148.5 points to easily outpace runner up Shenandoah’s 102 points. The Rams did it despite winning just two gold medals.

“This was an outstanding team effort and a true team championship,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner.  “We were able to double place in nine of the 12 individual events.  We finished runner up in six events.  In the relay races, we placed in the top three in six of the 7 (events).”

Andrew Smith was the lone individual champion winning the 800-meters. The Rams’ distance medley relay team of Tristan Ludwig, Tristan Meier, Victor Cruz and Bryant Keller captured first place.

“We really worked a lot of our kids and they stepped up to the challenge,” Starner said.

Bryant Keller had a pair of second  place finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200-meters. Reagan Skarnulis was second in the shot. The Rams’ 4x100, sprint medley and 4x200-meter relays placed second.

“Our seniors led us and our underclassmen followed their lead and stepped it up,” Starner said. “We are very proud of our kids and had our best meet of the year collectively, performance wise.   We scored our highest power ranking of the year and currently are ranked No. 3 overall in Class 3A.”

The Glenwood girls ran away with the team title with 175 points. Council Bluffs Lewis Central was second with 110 points.

“Just outstanding effort all around, easily our best performance of the year, and that is saying something because these girls have been doing great all season,” said Glenwood girls coach Jordan Bueltel. “It was nice to see their hard work paying off at this point in the season.  Danika (Arnold) had a great night setting 3 personal bests on the night 100, 200, 400 (meters) and breaking a 50-year-old school record in the 200.”

Arnold captured a pair of conference titles in the 200 and 400-meters. Breckyn Peterson and Abi Hiller grabbed gold in the 400-meter hurdles and the discus.

The Rams also picked up relay golds in the 4x100, 4x200, shuttle hurdle and 4x800-meter relays.
