Glenwood grabs 16 medals at competitive Sioux City Relays

Grace Berglund was third in the 3,000-meters at the Sioux City Relays Saturday with a time of 10:21.14.
The Glenwood girls and boys combined to win 16 medals at the 61st running of the Sioux City Relays Saturday at Elwood Olsen Stadium at Morningside University.
After weather played havoc with the Rams’ schedule, Glenwood coach Mark Starner said it was nice to get back on the track.
“We have cancelled our last three meets and were chomping at the bit to get back and compete,” Starner said. “The meet started out in true spring-like fashion with an hour lightning delay in the pouring rain. Soon, the rain went away, and everything was off and running.”
On the day, the boys had 11 season best performances, along with 11 personal best this season.
Shane Pratt, Lincoln Skarnulis and Evan Stanislav led the Rams with a strong field performance.
Pratt had a huge day in long jump with a season-best leap of 21 feet, 11 inches to finish third and move into second place all-time in Glenwood history in the event, just an inch and a half off the school record.
Skarnulis found the podium twice in both shot put (fifth place) and discus (fifth). His toss of 49 feet ,1.5 inches was a season best in the shot and discus throw of 151 feet, 11 inches was also a personal-best by over 12 feet.
Stanislav, not to be outdone by his other field event teammates, set a new personal best in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 1 inch and placing runner up in the event.
In the running events, Haze Stephens was the only Ram to reach the podium, placing third in the 400-meters.
In the relays, four of the Rams’ six qualifying teams were able to set personal best, with the distance medley team of Kayden Crouch, Stephens, Dylan Powles and Bryce Keller finishing third in 3:45.37.
The 4x100-meter relay placed third and took a second off of their previous best performance last week and are currently tied for fifth fastest all-time in Glenwood history. The relay team of Chase Razor, Ethan Eiseman, Pratt and Crouch won their heat by nearly two-seconds and finished only a three-tenths of a second to the relay champion.
“Overall, it was good competition again and the kids responded well to the nuances of long-all day meet with inclement weather,” Starner said.
On the girls side, the Rams were led Megan Hughes in then hurdles. The junior won the “Elite” 100-meter hurdles and placed second in the Class B 100-meter hurdles.
Grace Berglund added a third-place medal in the 3,000-meters and held the Rams to a second place showing in the 4x800-meters.
