Glenwood goes 0-2 in ‘Battle of the Bluffs’ tournament

Jason Colpitts had a pair of hits in Glenwood’s two games at the “Battle of the Bluffs.”
Glenwood’s offense struggled in a pair of shutout losses in the Battle of Bluffs Baseball Tournament Saturday.
The Rams (7-8 overall, 5-6 in the conference) dropped a 4-0 decision to A-D-M and Sergeant Bluff-Luton 10-0 in Glenwood.
“We didn’t hit the ball too well, especially the second game,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schultz. “We had some opportunities the first game and we just didn’t capitalize. Not sure why, but we didn’t hit.”
Glenwood could muster just three hits off A-D-M starting pitcher Grant Rychnovsky, who fanned four and walked two in six innings of work. In the tournament capper, Sergeant Bluff limited the Rams to three hits, all singles.
Parker Lutgen earned the win for Sergeant Bluff-Luton. The sophomore struck out three and walked one in five innings.
In all, the Rams used seven pitchers in the two games.
Ryan Turner took the game one loss after allowing three hits and an earned run in 2 1/3 innings.
Jason Colpitts, Nolan Allmon and Brody Taylor had two hits each for the Rams in the two games combined.
Glenwood 6,
Creston 5
Glenwood plated four runs in the top of the first and held on in a 6-5 victory on the road at Creston in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball last Tuesday.
“We played pretty well,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schultz. “They had some miscues in the infield and the outfield and I guess we had some too. But we hit the ball pretty well. And some right at them too.”
The Rams finished with 11 hits.
Jason Colpitts had three hits and Nolan Clark two to lead the Rams. Colpitts doubled and drove in three runs.
Kayden Anderson struck out nine and scattered eight hits and two earned runs in five innings to earn the victory on the mound.
“He pitched well,” Schultz said. “He threw strikes but he got up in the pitch count so we went to (Evan) Soergel and he threw okay. He hung one up and they got a three-run shot off him but he came back and struck the next guy out. We hung in there. So that was good to see.”
Sam Henry homered and drove in three runs to lead Creston at the plate.
Dylan Hoepker struck out seven and allowed nine hits to take the loss.
Rams split with Harlan
The Glenwood baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision in game one and bounced back to win the nightcap 7-6 to split a Hawkeye 10 Conference home double-header with Harlan last Monday.
“We had opportunities to score some more,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schultz. “The way things went, either game could have gone either way and both teams could have swept. We’re pretty evenly matched and neither of us went crazy at the plate.”
The Rams plated all of their game one runs in the first inning but could not hold the Cyclones off despite a quality pitching performance by Ryan Turner. Turner scattered eight hits and four earned runs while striking five in a complete-game.
“He threw pretty well,” Schultz said. “I thought he threw better than the decision he got. He threw better than that, but that’s baseball.”
Turner and Brody Taylor had Glenwood’s two hits in the loss.
In the capper, Kayden Anderson smacked three hits, including a grand slam, and Trent Patton had two hits, including the game-winning RBI single in the sixth inning in the 7-6 win. Nolan Allmon picked up the game two win on the mound after pitching 3 1/3 innings of one hit relief.
“Kayden has been hitting well all year,” Schultz said. “He’s hitting somewhere around .600 so he’s hitting really well.”
Brock Lemerick notched the game one win out of the bullpen for the Cyclones after allowing two hits and no runs in 5 2/3 innings. Caleb Schleis took the game two loss. The junior allowed one hit and two runs in three innings of work.
