Glenwood girls capture seventh straight H-10 title

Glenwood’s Allison Koontz helped the Rams to a gold medal at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Track and Field meet last week.

Glenwood’s Victory Cruz, shown here earlier this season, placed third in the 400-meter hurdles at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Meet.
For the seventh year in a row, the Glenwood girls track and field team left no doubt about who runs the Hawkeye 10 conference, dominating the championship meet with a display of speed, strength, and unshakable tradition.
The Rams racked up five gold medals and 141.5 points to capture the team title for the seventh consecutive season – and the 10th in the last 11 seasons – Thursday in Creston. Council Bluffs Lewis Central was the distant runner up with 119 points.
Megan Hughes was the Rams’ lone individual gold medal winner, running a 1:07.38 to win the 400-meter hurdles. Their sprint medley, shuttle hurdle, 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays also captured gold.“The girls really came out ready to run and exceeded all of our expectations,” said Glenwood girls coach Jordan Bueltel. “What really stood out to me was our depth, we only had one champion in an individual event, but we were able to capture four relay victories.”
Bueltel said his team’s goal is always to continue to improve all season and Thursday showed that progress with 11 out of their 15 individual runners setting a season’s best in their open event as well as four relays setting season’s best as well.
The Rams thrower also did a nice job picking up points with both Abi Hiller (discus) and Ava Hernandez (shot put) finishing third, points which came up huge in the team race.
“It was an outstanding night and the girls all really impressed and we are excited to keep that rolling the next two weeks,” Bueltel said.
Council Bluffs Lewis Central tallied 162 points to secure the boys team title. Glenwood was the runner up with 118 points.
“This was a tough meet for us,” said Glenwood boys coach Mark Starner. “Beating Lewis Central was going to be tough. We gave it our best shot, but just wasn’t able to get it done. We had several outstanding performances. In relays we ran five season best times and the two we didn’t were just fractions of seconds off the season best.”
The Rams’ 4x800, 4x400, 4x100-meter relays alls placed second with season best times while the 4x200 and distance medley relays were third with season bests.
Evan Stanislav hit a personal best, clearing 6 feet with two really good attempts at 6 feet, 2 inches to finish third.
Chase Razor was the Rams’ won lone champion winning the high jump with a top leap of 6 feet. While that figure was under potential, according to Starner, Chase is consistent to 6 feet and has had several good attempts at 6 feet, 2 inches.
“The state qualifying meet is loaded in high jump too, so we’ll need Chase’s best to earn that repeat trip back to the state meet, but he’s due to have a big meet,” Starner said.
Lincoln Skarnulis continued to surpass performances in previous meets in the shot put, tossing another personal best for third place (53 feet, 9.75 inches) at the conference meet.
“Lincoln is on a terror and just continues to step up his throws in shot,” Starner said. “He’s going to have to continue on this trend as our State Qualifying Meet is loaded, but Lincoln can hang with the best of them.”
Aaden Lopez was the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles while Victor Cruz ran just off of his 400-meter dash time to finish second.
Haze Stephens finished third in the 400-meters, breaking the freshman record. Haze is solid in the 400m and also anchors our 4x400.
“So proud of this senior group,” Starner said. “They’ve been able to vie for a conference championships every year placing in the top two every year in high school and winning the team title last year. A majority of these seniors have been contributing to the varsity line up over the past four years. They’ve scored a lot of points and have definitely made their mark within our program. They get one more chance to run at home and fight to prolong their season one more week this coming Thursday.”
Glenwood hosts the Class 3A Co-ed State Qualifying Meet at the Glenwood Athletic Complex Thursday. The field events begin at 4 p.m.

Glenwood boys second, girls third at Bruce Henderson invite
The Glenwood boys and girls combined to win six events and placed second and third place team finishes at the Bruce Henderson Invitational in Atlantic last Monday.
Council Bluffs Lewis Central captured the team title with a score of 104. The host Trojans were second with 91.5 points followed by Glenwood’s 88.5.
“It was a beautiful night to run,” said Glenwood girls coach Jordan Bueltel. “We went into this meet as kind of a tune up for conference and to try a couple things that we potentially will try and run at districts.”
Bueltel thought Madelyn Berglund really stood out at the meet, running a career best split in the gold medal winning 4x800-meter relay and then following that up with a career best split in the 4x400 that placed fourth. Berglund added a third place finish in the 1,500-meters.
The Rams’ distance medley relay team of Erin Dougherty, Allison Koontz, Brooklyn Schultz and Breckyn Petersen was second in 4:15.07.
“We hadn’t ran that combination before but we thought it could do well, but you never really know until you put them our there and see what happens,” Bueltel said. “Luckily it was a veteran group and they all came out and ran really well for us. Overall it was an impressive night for what we were trying to accomplish and I think it got the girls ready to go for the next few Thursdays.”
Glenwood was the runner up on the boys’ side, finishing with 117 points to Atlantic’s 124 points.
Aaden Lopez led the way for the Rams with gold medals in the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump. Victory Cruz (400) and Chase Razor (high jump) added golds.
The Rams added second place finishes from its 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays.
