Glenwood falls on road at Abraham Lincoln

Glenwood smacked 16 hits in a 14-9 loss to Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln on the road at Jon Lieber Field in Council Bluffs Friday.

The two teams combined for 31 hits in the game, but the Rams dug themselves a 10-2 hole after four innings they could never dig out of in the loss.

“We hit the ball really well and we’re really barreling it,” said Glenwood coach Dave Clark. “They probably thought the game was over after about four innings, but we kept at it and put a little pressure on them.” 

Benn Christiansen had three hits and Ben Carlo, Max Koehler, Grahm Newberry, Charlie Hutchcraft and Brennan Anderson two hits each for the Rams. Anderson and Newberry each drove in two runs apiece.

Trey Williamson made his first start of the season in game one and allowed four hits and seven earned runs in 1 and 2/3 innings of work.

Riley Lincoln picked up the win for the Lynx scattering 14 hits and eight earned runs over six innings. Ray Doner singled three times and drove in four runs for Abraham Lincoln.

Rams 0-2 at Creston

Glenwood went on the road and dropped a pair of games 4-0 and 7-6 at Creston in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball Thursday.

The Rams (9-10) struggled to find the rhythm at the plate in game one with Panther pitchers Landyn Scherer and Tanner Ray combing to allow just two hits and striking out 11 in the win.

Benn Christiansen and Trey Williamson had the Rams’ game one hits. Christiansen took the loss on the hill after surrendering seven hits and two earned runs while striking out two.

In the nightcap, the Lynx plated all seven of their runs in the first two innings before Jackson Erickson settled down and pitched a shutout over his next three innings but took the loss.

“He does a really good job throwing strikes but he got beat up early and had some walk issues and a couple balks but he hung in there after I thought about pulling him after the second inning but he has a really good arm and I left him in there and really ended up shutting them down the rest of the way,” Clark said of Erickson. “I’m really proud of him for battling back after getting down 7-3 like he did. We chipped away and we kept in it but just came up short.”

Thomas Mikkelsen pitched 4 and 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits and six earned runs to notch the win in game two.

After struggling at the plate in game one, the Rams did bounce back at the plate in game two with 12 hits.

“We didn’t score anything in that game one, so we switched some things up in game two and the bottom of our lineup really came through with some timely hits,” said Glenwood coach Dave Clark.

The Rams’ six, seven, eight and nine hitters collected six hits with freshman Jace Woodward notching a single and a double in in his first extended after an early season injury.

Myles Stanton went 4-for-6 and Max Koehler had two hits and drove in a run in game two.

Red Oak 9,

Glenwood 2

Reese Montgomery tossed a complete game on the mound and helped his own cause driving in two runs for Red Oak in a 9-2 win over Glenwood in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball last Tuesday in Glenwood.

Montgomery scattered three hits and one earned run while striking out four in his 92-pitch victory.

“We played well tonight,” said Glenwood coach Tristin Johnson. “Reese started us out strong on the mound. He did a great job settling in early and getting all his pitches over the zone. He kept hitters guessing and working out of some jams later in the game. We also did a great job making plays behind him having only one error and turning two double plays in the game.”

Johnson also felt like his team did a great job of making adjustments at the plate all game long against the Rams’ two pitchers. 

“The first time through the lineup we were out in front hitting weak grounders and pop ups,” Johnson said. “After that we did a great job sitting back and letting the ball travel which equated to hard-line drives which were finding gaps today.”

Ram starter Ben Carlo allowed nine hits and four earned runs over 5 and 2/3 innings before giving way to reliever Charlie Hutchcraft. Carlo was credited with the loss.

Kaleb Sebeniecher, Carson Roeder, Masen Fisher, Ferree and Montgomery each had two hits for the Tigers.

Brennan Anderson, Trey Williamson and Myles Stanton collected one hit each for Glenwood.

Rams sweep Falcons

Glenwood picked up its fifth and sixth straight wins in a double-header sweep of Council Bluffs St. Albert in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball last Monday.

The Rams won game one in dramatic fashion on Benn Christiansen’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh. In the capper, Glenwood exploded for seven first inning runs on its way to a 13-2 victory.

Christiansen led an 11-hit Ram attack in the opening game with a 3-for-5 night at the pale. Grahm Newberry tripled and doubled and drove in three runs and Max Koehler had two hits and drove in a run.

Koehler, who started and the mound, went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs while striking out four but did not factor in the decision. Christiansen came on to pitch the final 1 and 1/3 innings while allowing two this and striking out two to earn the win on the hill.

Cael Yrkoski took the loss after allowing five hits and two earned runs over four innings. 

In the nightcap, Myles Stanton tossed a five-inning complete game, striking out four and scattering two hits to notch the win. Stanton also helped his own cause at the plate with two hits and two RBIs.

Brennan Anderson added three hits and drove in a run, and Ben Carlo and Charlie Hutchcraft added two hits each.

In both games, Glenwood coach Dave Clark thought his team’s pitching was the difference with both Koehler and Stanton having strong, five-plus inning performances.

“Both pitched well, they gave up a few cheap runs here and there but for the most part, they battled pretty good,” he said. “We also hit the ball pretty good, which was fortunate. We came out on top in the first one and then we kind of piled on in the second game.” 

Dane Yrkoski allowed seven hits and four earned runs to take the loss for St. Albert in game two.
