Glenwood crowns four at conference meet

Four Glenwood wrestlers won individual titles and the Rams placed third as a team at Saturday’s Hawkeye 10 Conference Wrestling Meet in Creston.
The home Panthers secured the team title with 224 points, edging runner-up Council Bluffs Lewis Central by seven points. The Rams tallied 205.5 points for third place in the team standings.
Creston had individual champions and the Titans three.
The Rams’ four individual champions – 120-pound Vinny Mayberry, 132-pound Matt Beem, 160-pound Kellan Scott and 215-pound Mason Koehler – led all conference teams.
“I thought we wrestled really well,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “Those other two teams just wrestled a little better. I can’t be upset with our effort. We gave it our best shot and came up a little short but I was impressed with a lot of our kids.”
Mayberry’s title was historic. The senior’s technical fall of Kuemper Catholic’s Caleb Hoffman in the finals makes him a four-time Hawkeye 10 Conference champion.
Mayberry is one of only three Rams, along with Tom Becker and Rick Moreno, to win four conference titles and the 20th wrestler overall in the history of the conference to accomplish the feat.
“He’s consistently putting himself in the record books for the Glenwood wrestling program,” Weber said. “I think that was something he really wanted. He wanted to do it a different way – a couple kids he wanted to wrestle weren’t there – but you can only wrestle who they put in front of you.”
For Beem, the conference title is his second. He pinned Lewis Central’s Derrick Gregory to win his title and cap a perfect day on the mat.
“He’s on a different level right now,” Weber said of Beem who is undefeated on the season at 33-0. “He’s taken a huge jump this year mentally being more calm and patient and getting to his attacks and dominating. I like his chances moving forward the rest of the year.”
The conference titles were the first for Koehler and Scott.
Scott won his first conference title in dramatic fashion. Down 4-3 with :11 remaining in the match against Creston’s William Bollinger, Scott scored a late takedown to secure the win.
“He wrestled all six minutes,” Weber said. “It’s something we’ve been kind of preaching to him. He’s probably one of the most talented kids on our team, we just have to get him to wrestled six (minutes). That was a big mental hurdle for him to get over that an avenge a loss to a ranked him from earlier this season.”
Koehler scored a 6-1 victory over Creston’s Quinten Fuller in the finals. Koehler lost in last year’s conference finals as a freshman.
“It’s his conference title and he’s taken a big mental step this year too,” Weber said. “He’s opening up his arms and not being so one dimensional. All those kids work hard and they’re good leaders. All our young kids look up to them. They show it on the mat.”
The Rams got third place finishes from Briten Maxwell (138), Treyton Williamson (150) and Trent Patton (285).
With regional duals this week and the state qualifying meet right around the corner, Weber said he can feel his team starting to dial on the postseason.
“Physically and mentally I like where we’re at right now,” Weber said. “We’re wrestling harder, and they feel like we can get it done.”
