Glenwood bounces back in 42-14 win
After back-to-back losses the Glenwood football team bounced back on the road with a 42-14 win over Denison in Class 4A, District 6 win Friday on homecoming in Denison.
The Rams (3-2) held a slim 7-0 lead after the first quarter and put together three second quarter touchdown drives to take a commanding 28-0 lead in the half on their way to the win.
“It was good night for our team,” said Glenwood coach Cory Faust. “The boys played hard all night, and made a lot of really good plays.”
All night long Faust said his team was the more physical squad.
“Our team showed some physical superiority in terms of physicality and speed,” he said. “There’s still plenty of things we can improve on this week, though. We still have some lapses in executing assignments and fundamentals. We need to make those improvements if we want to be successful against the best teams in the state.”
For the game Glenwood out-gained the Monarchs 349 to 197. The Rams tallied 243 yards on the ground and 106 through the air.
After losing starting quarterback Ben Carlo to injury in last week’s 31-0 loss to Council Bluffs Lewis Central, Haze Stephens, who had played mostly at running back this season, took the majority of the snaps under center against Denison. The junior completed 7-of-13 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 46 yards and two more scores.
Freshmen Gannon Cook also saw his first varsity action at quarterback, throwing for 55 yards and a touchdown.
Joe Leick led the Ram ground attack with 85 yards on 10 carries.
The Ram defense limited the Monarchs to 47 yards rushing on 24 attempts – 1.9 per attempt – and 1-of-13 on third down while grabbing four takeaways.
Faust said linebacker Grahm Newberry was a standout on defense in the game. The senior middle linebacker forced a fumble preventing a sure touchdown for the Monarchs early in game and then ripped the ball out of a ball carrier’s hand and ran it in 35 yards for a touchdown.
“He’s done a great job all year, so it was not a surprise he made these plays,” said Faust of the 5-foot-100, 200-pounder.
Glenwood heads on the road in district play Friday at No. 8 ranked ADM. The 5-1 Tigers will be a formidable challenge, Faust said.
“ADM is one of those top programs in the state,” the coach said. “They’ve got really good talent and they have played really well this season. They have balance on offense with some good receivers and a quarterback that can create with his legs. Defensively, they are very aggressive in the box while keeping the ball in front of them in the secondary. They have one of the top linebackers in the state.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday in Adel.
