Glenwood bats go quiet in 12-0 at loss Roland-Story tourney

The Glenwood softball team got just one game in at a rain-shortened Roland-Story Softball Classic in Story City Saturday.

Class 3A, No. 7 ranked Saydel (17-3) jumped all over the Rams (14-9 overall, 11-5 in the conference) in the first inning, plating nine runs in a 12-0, three-inning victory.

Allison Koontz had Glenwood’s lone hit off Eagle starter Dakota Lake. Lake struck out seven and did not walk a batter in the shutout victory.

“We had a tough time catching up to her,” said Glenwood coach Ryan Koch of Lake. “She threw real hard. She had a different kind of pitching motion that was slow but when she released the ball it got on our hands quick.”

Glenwood 7,
Red Oak 0

Brynn Schrock tossed a no-hitter and Glenwood notched 11 hits in a 7-0 victory over Red Oak in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball Thursday.

Schrock struck out seven and walked two in the victory.

“She pitched a beautiful game,” said Glenwood coach Ryan Koch. “She’s been pretty darn solid all year taking advantage of her opportunities but that was probably the best game she’s pitched all year. She was tough on them.”

Audrey Albers had three hits, including a double and a triple, and scored three runs to pace the Rams. Allison Koontz added two hits and drove in a run.

“That was one of our better hitting games the last couple of weeks,” Koch said. “That was good to see, Audrey catch fire and Abby Hargins had some really fantastic plays in right field and Faith Weber had some really nice plays (at second base) and Sara Kolle had a diving catch to end of the game. Those are the plays you need to preserve a no hitter.”

Nicole Bond took the loss in the circle after allowing four earned runs and striking out two.

Glenwood 3,
Shenandoah 2

Glenwood held off a late Shenandoah rally in 3-2 victory in Hawkeye 10 Conference softball last Tuesday.

The Rams led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh where the Fillies plated two runs.

“We definitely made it interesting at the end,” said Glenwood coach Ryan Koch. “The girls have been used to those close games this year. (Allison) Koontz was real relaxed in the circle and she finished the job when we needed. It was just a little closer than it needed to be.”

Koontz doubled, drove in a run and scored twice, and McKenna Wilkes had a hit and an RBI. Sara Kolle also had one hit for Glenwood behind a 14-strikeout complete game from Koontz, who gave up two hits and two unearned runs.

Jenna Burdorf and Abbey Dumler had hits for Shenandoah, and Rachel Jones drove in the only run of the game. Peyton Athen threw six solid innings and struck out nine in the loss.

Rams split
road double header

Glenwood softball bounced back from a tough 7-5 loss in game one to down Atlantic 6-4 in the nightcap in a Hawkeye 10 Conference road double-header last Monday in Atlantic.

The Rams led 5-0 in game one when defensive breakdowns let the Trojans back in the game. They committed all six of their errors in the frame leading to all seven of Atlantic’s runs being unearned.  The Rams never recovered.

“That was one of those innings where absolutely nothing went right,” said Glenwood coach Ryan Koch. “That’s life. But we bounced back.”

Allison Koontz took the game one loss after scattering six hits and striking out six.

McKenna Wilkes and Brynn Schrock each had two hits and drove in two runs in the opener.

In game two, the Rams still had their miscues in the field – four errors – but smacked 12 hits at the plate off Atlantic pitcher Zoey Kirchoff.

“Hitting definitely won the second one for us. And Brynn pitched a very good game in the second one. We just have to clean things up defensively. We’re getting errors in bunches when we get them. We have to learn, if we make one mistake, to give ourselves some grace and move on and think next pitch. It’s a learning curve.”

Kolle, Weber, Koontz and Wilkes had two hits each to pace the Rams. Schrock, who picked up the win in the circle after allowing five hits and one earned runs in 6 1/3 innings, also doubled and drove in two runs.
