Glenwood advances six on to district wrestling meet

Glenwood’s Tylder Boldra bounced back from a dramatic loss in the 170-pound finals at sectionals to win a wrestleback that moved him on to districts.

HARLAN - Glenwood crowned three individual champions and added three runners-up at the Class 2A, Sectional 4 Tournament on Saturday in Harlan.

In all, the Rams advanced six wrestlers to this week’s Class 2A, District 2 meet in Glenwood. The top two finishers at districts advance to next week’s Iowa State Wrestling Tournament.

The Rams were second in a tight team scoring day that saw the top four teams separated by just 25 points. Glenwood finished with 173 points. Carroll tallied 183.5 Harlan was third with 168.5 points.

The Rams’ Vinny Mayberry (113 pounds), Matthew Beam (126) and C.J. Carter (195) all won their respective weight classes. All punching tickets to their host district was Kellen Scott (145), Tate Mayberry (152) and Tyler Boldra (170).

Carter, the No. 2 ranked 195 pounder in the state, qualified for districts without even wrestling a match. His weight had just three competitors and after earning two byes to the finals, his opponent in the championship, Harlan’s Matt Schwery, forfeited due to an injury.

“He won his sectional without even wrestling a match,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber.

No. 5-ranked Vinny Mayberry wrestled just one match, pinning Southwest Iowa’s Seth Ettleman to advance to districts.

“Vinny is wrestling at a high level right now,” Weber said. “He trains hard and he’s trying to get on the podium for sure (at state). He has expectations and high goals. He’s looking tough right now.”

Beem, who entered sectionals ranked No. 6 at 126 in the state, pinned Harlan’s No. 9 ranked Luke Freund in the finals.

“Matt’s wrestling at high level too,” Weber said. “He’s wrestled the Freund kid from Harlan a few times and Matt’s dominated him each time. He’s on a different level right now and looking good.”

Tate Mayberry reached the finals at 152 but was pinned by Green County’s Gavin Scheurermann in the finals. Mayberry came back to win his wrestleback with a fall over Carroll’s Justin Riesberg.
Boldra pinned Harlan’s Tyrel Jacobsen in the semifinals and but then lost in a dramatic sudden victory finals to Carroll’s Sterling Rodman. Boldra bounced back to defeat Southwest Iowa’s Hadley Reilly in a second period fall to earn a district spot.

The Rams’ Trent Patton just missed making it a seventh district qualifier when the 220-pounder, ahead 3-2 on Harlan’s Jeremiah Davis, suffered a last second takedown to lose 4-3. Patton then lost a wrestleback to Southwest Iowa’s Samuel Daly to finish just outside the top three and a spot at districts.

“That was a tough one for him,” Weber said.

As the sectional champion, Carroll advances as the automatic qualifier to the regional dual team tournament.  Glenwood, as the one of the eight highest ranked teams who did not win its sectional, is also a regional dual team qualifier.

The No. 18 ranked Rams were slated to face No. 11 Atlantic in the opening round at Creston Tuesday. The winner of that match then squares off against No. 5 Creston with a spot at state duals on the line. Results of those matches were not available as of publication.
