Glenwood 13th at Rollin Dyer Invitational

Glenwood’s Mason Koehler, shown here in Thursday’s dual, finished second at the Rollin Dyer Invitational.
Glenwood’s Mason Koehler was a runner-up, and the Rams finished 13th in the team standings at a stacked Rollin Dyer Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Atlantic.
The hosts from Atlantic topped the stacked field at the tournament featuring some of the top teams in Iowa and Nebraska.
“This has become a really stacked tournament the last few years,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “It’s nice to see how its grown.”
The Trojans finished with 191.5 points to edge perennial power Omaha Skutt Catholic’s 179 points.
The Rams tallied 71 points for 13th place. They had five wrestlers take home medals led by Koehler’s second place.
In a showdown of top ranked 215-pounders, Koehler, top ranked in Iowa, lost in the finals to Skutt’s Cade Ziola, who is ranked No.1 in Nebraska.
“He’s ranked pretty high nationally,” Weber said of Ziola. “There’s levels to the sport of wrestling and he (Koehler) found out there’s a next gear we need to get to, and we ran into a really tough kid.”
Ziola, who is committed to wrestle at Nebraska, got by Koehler in a rare first period technical fall, 19-4.
“He’s really good about getting his opponents moving and being dominant in about every position and makes kids feel uncomfortable,” Weber said. “A lot of the Skutt kids are looking for first period technical falls, which is tough to do and pretty impressive. Credit to him. He got us on our back a few times and all the sudden it was over.”
The Rams’ Drake Buthe defeated Carroll’s Jeisson Alvilez DeLeon to pick up a third-place medal.
“We competed about where we’re at,” Weber said. “You wrestle a tough tournament; you’re going to have tough competition. We have to keep working and get better.”

Glenwood boys 2-1,
girls 1-1 at Red Oak
The Glenwood boys were 2-1 and the girls were 1-1 in a co-ed Hawkeye 10 Conference meet in Red Oak Thursday.
The Rams knocked off the host Tigers 60-22 and Shenandoah 46-35 before suffering a loss to Council Bluffs Lewis Central, 55-21.
“Shenandoah could have gone either way so that was a good one to get,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “We didn’t match up well with Lewis Central, they have some hammers at some weights we don’t right now, so they beat us pretty good.”
Glenwood got three wins each from Mason Koehler (215-pounds), Drake Buthe (285) and Reese Fauble (157). Brody Black (113), Christian Lopez (120), Lundvall (175) and Benn Christensen (126) had two wins apiece.
Koehler avenged a loss to the Titans’ Joseph Monge from last season with an 8-6 win this time around.
“That was good to see after he got taken down early and battled back to get a win,” Weber said of Koehler’s dual win over Monge.
Weber said reserve Colton Hastie stepped up to get a big win against Shenandoah after his top 132-pounder, Mark Reed, bowed out after not feeling well. Hastie picked up a pin of the Mustang’s Treyton Reefling to give Glenwood crucial points in the tight dual win.
“That was big for us in what was a very close match,” Weber said.
Glenwood’s girls split their matches, winning 35-6 over Shenandoah and falling to Red Oak 42-29.
The Rams’ Ahna Grassau (110 pounds), Audrina Johansen (120), Maya Rivas (140), Lydia Logan (190), Amethyst James (235) all went 2-0 on the night.
