Knights repeat as Corner champs

The Griswold boys track team claimed its second straight Corner Conference championship title on its home track last Tuesday.

The Tigers won 13 events and scored 185.5 points to runner-up Fremont-Mills’ 147 points.

“This victory, a culmination of four years of teaching discipline, sacrifice, and work ethic, stands as a testament to the Tigers’ unyielding pursuit of excellence,” said Griswold coach Andy Everett.

In the field events, RJ Dishong, battling a sore elbow, delivered a personal record of
147-5.75 to win the discus, while Conner Bowers cleared 6 feet, 5 inches in the high jump to secure first.

On the track, Peyton Cook grabbed gold in the 100-meter dash, earning the title of fastest man in the conference, and won both the 110-meter high hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Cody Dorscher won the 400 and 800-meters and Holden Jensen completed the distance double for the second consecutive year, setting personal records in
the 3200 and 1600-meter run.

In the relays, Tiger showed their depth, winning the sprint medley, shuttle hurdle, 4x00 and 4x800-meter relays. showcased the team’s cohesion.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Wyatt Silk, Auden Wilson, Peyton Cook, and Bode Wyman shattered the school record with a time of 60.74, earning first place and the top ranking in Class 1A.

East Mills finished fifth in the team standings with 79 points. The Wolverines won the 4x200-meter relay and got second place finishes from Jiri Brodigan in the 100-meters, Walter Seipold in the 400-meter hurdles and its sprint medley relay.

On the girls side, Fremont-Mills ran away with the team title with 228 points, 93 more than runner-up Griswold.

The Knights won 10 events and placed second in five more to secure their second conference title in a row.

“The girls took a very business-like approach to the meet,” said Fremont-Mills girls coach Kyle Fichter. “The number one thing for them was to secure the 18th consecutive combined points trophy. To do this they had to be at their best in a very busy schedule with a short turn around in a small conference meet. All of the kids did phenomenal with many of them doing events that they were not used to as we moved things around for maximum points.”

Lana Alley led the way with four gold medals. The junior won the 100, 200, long jump and joined Reese Gute, Bella Gute and Carlie Nuckolls on the shuttle hurdle relay that posted a season-best time of 1:05.68, the fastest in Class 1A this season.

“Lana has had a strong year along with many of her teammates,” Fichter said. “The conference meet she had was a special one for her as she was able to finish first in all of her events even though some of them she rarely does. The whole roster showed their commitment to the track program and gave us everything they had.”

Also grabbing individual gold medals for the Knights were Hayleigh Mattox in the shot and the discus, Bella Gute in the 400-meter hurdles and Hanna Wilson in the 800. They also won the 4x200 and distance medley relays.

The runner-up Griswold girls got first place finishes from Carsyn Adams in the 100 and 400-meters, Josie Millikan in the 3,000-meters and its 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays.

Stanton was third in the girls conference standings with the Viqueens’ 4x100-meter relay capturing gold.  Hannah Olson (100-meter hurdles and the 200-meters) and Lauren Johnson (long jump) both picked up second place medals.

East Mills tallied 83 points for fourth place. The Wolverines were led by second place finishes by Caityln Crouse (1,500-meters) and its 4x800-meter relay.
