Four Rams pick up titles at Dan Hill invite

The Glenwood wrestling team had four wrestlers win individual titles as the Rams wrapped up a third place finish in the team standings at the Dan Hill Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Harlan.

Winterset won the team title with 231 points. The Huskies had three individual champions in Corbin Reisz (120 pounds), Wyatt Reisz (152) and Gavin Maguire (160) and four other wrestlers place second.

Logan-Magnolia was the team runner-up with 207 points.

The Rams placed third with 178 points despite bringing just 10 wrestlers to the tournament.

“We had a pretty good day,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber.

The Rams’ Vincent Mayberry (113 pounds), Matthew Beam (126), C.J. Carter (195) and Trent Patton (220) all won individual titles.

“All four of our champions really wrestled well,” Weber said.

Mayberry beat all three of his opponents, including Winterset’s  Kasen Cochran in the finals, on his way to his title. Beam scored two pins and then major decision his final over Harlan’s Luke Freund.

Carter pinned Winterset’s Carter Smuck in his final and Patton pinned Harlan’s Jeremiah Davis in the 2020 pound final.

“They always have good competition at this one and this was good starter tournament for us,” Weber said. “Our kids wrestled hard.”

Rams win pair in season opener

The Glenwood wrestling team opened its season with a 2-1 dual record at Underwood Thursday.

The Class 2A, No. 10 ranked Rams downed Riverside 56-12 and the host Eagles, who entered ranked No. 4 in Class 1A, 41-39. Atlantic/CAM notched a 45-31 win over Glenwood.

“We wrestled well and we matched up really well against Underwood,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “Trent Patton really stood out for us. He moved up to heavyweight and he beat the No. 6 ranked kid in 1A so that was a big turning point for us.”

Patton, the Rams’ usual 220-pounder, jumped up to heavyweight and pinned Underwood’s Easton Eledge at the 3:10 mark.

Vincent Mayberry, the No. 7 ranked 113-pounder in the state, led four Rams to go undefeated on the night. Also going 3-0 in the night were Tate Mayberry (160 pounds), C.J. Carter (195) and Patton (285).
